900 R - Loud clunk on clutch engagement

New renegade 900r, under minimal throttle I can hear a loud clunk, I checked drive chain tension, is ok. Minimal free play on jackshaft, I wouldn't consider it to be problematic.

Is this normal?
What else could it be?

do yourself a favor, next off season, throw in some better secondary rollers. Not sure if you 4 stroke guys have same problems as us 2 strokers, but the constant slamming and banging of the rollers only goes on for so long before they break, which can leave you stranded. Haven't tried the new Rhinos, am running HI-Torque now. So far, so good. Have run the doo docs with no issues. Good luck !

Mine does the same. I have tightened the belt and chain so thats not the issue. I assume that it's coming from the reverse gears because when you rotate the drive clutch by hand the slop never gets down to the track. I'm not worried about it.

It's caused by the compression spring in the secondary not holding tension on the helix and allowing it to slam into the rollers. If you run a torsion spring in the secondary, the noise will be gone.

Mine does that too. Was wondering the same thing. My chain is definitely tight, my track might need to be tightened a little.

Nothing to do with new sled but my buddy had started his 09 1200 the other morning and realized it was in reverse it quite and he took out of reverse and wouldn’t start again. We suspect it’s to do with the flywheel possibly it was a very cold night had it all warmed up with heaters for couple hours under insulated tarp still no luck ran great the day before we tried a little spray of fuel in breather with no kick so didn’t think it’s fuel issue

the fix is to run torsion springs
IMO they also just work better

The only torsion spring that I know of that might work for a torsion spring is the Dalton Black with Yellow Red it's a 80-125 & will need to be set to at least 21 lbs twist. I ran this spring in my 2021 900T & it worked well but I don't thing it will have enough force for the new 900 R as even the stock Green / Green compression spring is to weak & is allowing the clutch to over shift

No you will have to drill them, it's fairly easy to do it, but I did have a helix on hand to take a pattern from for the hole that need to be drilled. If you are even close with the spacing you will be fine. You do need to have the holes located properly where the tab sits in the groove on the inside of the helix though.

Remember that many folks here likes to adjust the secondary base to just have the track spin while in the air ?... works for me to help reduce many clunks. Along to let a little free roll at stop. Anything to not go back to twisters, i like 'em much for controlling upshift but they break. And yes, i broke a Dalton too.
Have to say also that being a GT, my primary engage a little smoother by OEM spring setting.
