Just speaking from my 1200 experience, it is very easy to over-fill with oil. I presume the 900 is similar. They share a procedure for checking the oil that must be followed...it's printed in owners manual and on a sticker inside the side panel. Involves FULL engine warm-up, idling for 30 seconds, then shutting down, then checking the oil...

if you deviate from this procedure and just pull the dipstick cold for example, it will often look low and you'll decide to add oil. But it likely didn't need it, and now it's overfilled....

Just something to keep in mind. Following procedure for checking the oil definitely does matter. 1200 reportedly takes 3.7 quarts but I've never been able to get much more than 3.4-ish in it after an oil change.

The 900 manual reportedly says it takes 3.5 quarts, and I would assume after an oil change you should add a bit less than that as I find with my 1200. So putting 3.7 into a 900 sounds like a slight overfill to me, though probably harmless.

You have me baffled with that question. My kit did not include any oil plugs. I had filter oring, another green oring, a steel compression washer, three spark plugs, and a gallon of oil. I did not use any new washers or orings, since mine were fine for re-use. I used 3.7 qts of the 4 qts they gave me. The owners manual says it takes 3.7 US qts for a change with filter.

Maybe I had the wrong maintenance kit. My kit couldve been for the 1200.

While the existance of two plugs in the drainpan seems to suggest there are two sumps, removing one plug drained virtually all the oil. I know because I put in 3.7 US qts and the stick shows it is right on full, so there couln't have been much extra left inside the engine. Possibly the plug I didn't pull has the magnet on it. I will pull both and check next time.
I think the manuel says that the ACE 900 takes 3.5 qts, and the 1200 takes 3.7 qts. I dont have the manuel with me to confirm.

They sold me an Ace 600 oil change kit with two extra quarts of oil. I can't understand why Skidoo doesn't have a kit for the 900.

LOL. That's why I always stock up in advance. I think I have 5 of those jugs sitting here purchased sometime last year. It keeps. Also worth mentioning that NAPA and Advance Auto Parts sometimes have better-than-Walmart deals on Mobil 1 quarts, usually in conjunction with when mail-in rebates are offered by Mobil 1. I have purchased Mobil 1 as cheap as $3.50 per quart in the past after rebate...usually mid-summer...just by paying attention to auto-parts store sale flyers year-round.

Yep, just picked up 5 quarts Mobil 1 and a filter for my car for $19.99 @ advance on sale. Didnt think i could beat the walmart deal but this did it.
Well I guess that time of year I mentioned just happens to be NOW LOL...

So now mail in for your $15 Mobil 1 rebate if you haven't already:

Remember how much we used to spend on injection oil just for the benefit of stinking like stupid? Now once-a-year oil change in the comfort of warm spring weather, maybe $30 per year out-of-pocket if you shop smart, and you're good to flat-out ignore the oil for thousands of miles...

One reason I love the 4 stroke sleds....

neither advance auto or walmart are participating retailers for the rebate

True. Last year NAPA wasn't on that list either, and they honored my rebate when I purchased form NAPA. And I see NAPA is on the list this year, but with restricted dates. I know they wouldn't honor Walmart...someone else tried that and was denied last year (this same discussion took place on 1200 forum last year). Not sure about Advance. Note the list says "SOME participating retailers"...like it doesn't necessarily have them all on the list. Anyway it's a 49 cent risk to try. Or Mobil 1 has contact me link and an 800 phone # where can just ask in advance and they'll answer before you mail it in and waste a stamp. It just depends how much penny pinching an individual wants to do...

Changed the oil & filter in my 900 today, noticed when removing the filter cap that the metal top of the filter was pressed in to the top of the filter cap. Just to mention it for those who may be changing their oil/filter for the first time.

Rotated the primary clutch, drained out the oil filter area to make it less messy.

Put in 3.25 qts, showed just shy of the max line on the sitck.

as i was changing oil on 600ace i remove 2 bolts under motor like the book says it work pretty good, also for my 900 ace i would remove top hood to get good acess to my filter without removing the muffler i think they where only 7 stanless steal screws, u have to remove windshield to have 3 screws remove.

For me, it worked well to remove the muffler to remove the oil filter cartridge as the spring bracket on the header pipe is right above it. With the muffler off, you can move the header pipe enough to make it easier.

Need to remove the muffler for chaincase maintenance anyways.
