850 Etec. How many miles to rebuild?

Looking at a 2018 Gade. It already has 7500 miles. Most 2-strokes don't go too far past that without at least a top end. Has anybody had to rebuild one yet? At how many miles? What's the highest miles you're running without having to rebuild?

Cant answer, but if you want to inspect before buying,,,
Check compression.
Check front of engine for oil running out of leaking rave valve area.
Check top injectors for leakage.
Check exhaust manifold bolts.
Track is probably getting close, especially if studded.

Assume the clutches both need service by 7500 miles. Inspect chain tensioner, consider replacing tensioner shoe. Some of the idler wheel bearings in suspension are bad by 7500. All are out of grease long before 7500, so could be rusty. Hyfax may be worn to limit. Skis are probably pretty beat up underneath. Fuel pump could go anytime. It surely needs plugs and a fuel filter.

Pretty sure mine blew up, 9600km. Cruising along normal, died and chugged. Took many attempts to start. Once started suddenly got hot. Too end ran ok, shkes at idle and lacks reverse. I noticed it used alot of oil on a short ride. Seems to be sitting below raves, see photo, what is this a sign of?

I wouldn't even think of buying a sled with 7500 miles on it but I won't buy a sled unless its new either.
Well that don't help.

There's is a thread with mileages posted. So far the 850 with oiled bearings are doing overall very well with high mileages on them.

Overall with any 2 stroke there would be a bunch of maintenance items to check off but if it's the right price with that considered then go for it. Keep in mind with this horrible winter lots of lower milage sleds are for sale at great prices.

4 years in and you can still tell its a guess....on any given 850 id say theres a good chance it sees 10 000km if trail ridden but theres way less chance that it reach 20k....4 years and we havent seen 30k km+++ id say its as good as a 600 etec...

@ 12000km i would consider this a real guess myself.....

I’m not sure why people always talk about replacing top ends all the sleds that have gone down where because of cranks not pistons unless of course your intake are bad and you lean it out. For the most part with the 850 we are hearing the big rod bearing issue I’m hoping it’s not a issue. If the price is right I would buy a 850 with lots of miles on it

Three 800etecs in our group have went down before 6000 miles. All were because of broken pistons causing catastrophic failure. Only one 850 so far, piston failure at 2200 miles. Mine has over 8000 on it and will be out of warranty next year, I’ll either top end it or trade it in Depends on how many more belts it blows this year.

If history repeats i've got about 500 miles left before my 19 goes boom. My 17 lost a base gasket at 2250 miles or so, hydrolocked, immediately bent and snapped the PTO rod tossing it out of the cases. Long block replacement. 1750 trouble free miles on my 19 now. Thus far my belts have lasted longer tahn the engines themselves.

At 7500 miles who cares about the engine, the rest of the chassis is torched. Every bushing is likely loose, ect ect. I wouldnt touch it unless it was for a price that I could justify throwing it away 6 months from now.

You'll be able to buy a leftover TNT model brand new for likely 10k in the northeast here within a few weeks with the winter we've been having, I cant imagine somebody is asking any less than 5,000$ for a 7500 mile 850.

For those of us that ride 7500 isn't that many miles it's not hard to replace bushing and bearings. Just because they have miles on doesn't mean you throw them away

So many variables.

How many hours of full throttle / high rpm operation? Owned by a person with no care for maintenance, or in heated storage in the winter and properly summerized every year?

Problem is, you can't SEE any of this stuff from the outside.........

I'd say pass unless it's REALLY cheap.......... it's a 2 stroke, and 7500 miles is alot. It will need a engine refre$h, clutch refre$h, $u$pen$ion refre$h ...............sure, if you can get it for a steal and are fluent in doing all this work yourself it may be a good buy, but most will tell you after you buy it and do all that it needs you are better off with a super clean lo miler that needs none of this done to it.

Doing the math, I think the risk is too high. Asking $7k. If it did lose a top end in a year or two, I could throw a big bore kit at it for $2500. But now I'm in it for $9500 total. That's not counting shock and clutch rebuilds. So I'd bee 10K in which is damn near a brand new leftover. I respect both sides of the argument, but you guys helped me make my decision to pass. Thanks to all that voiced their opinion.
