I need to service my chaincase and have a ton of 80w90 gear oil...will this suffice just fine?

Thanks,

Not saying it won't work fine, but it is a bit thicker than you need for cold temperature use. For the less than ten ounces it takes, I would be using 75W90 synthetic or similar. Imagine how thick that 80W90 will be on an extremely cold morning. Just my opinion.

May as well use 10W30, or vegetable oil it's even cheaper. No need to follow engineers recommendations. I mean, hey what do they know about oils viscosity at operating temperatures, their ability to withstand pressure, or additives to reduce oxidization. Just follow advice on the internet regarding lubricants.

Personally I use synthetic 75W140 though because I don't like walking.

I personally use Xps chaincase oil in my skidoo's if ya were in pinch I'd run 75/90 or synthetic trans fluid. Transfer cases in hd 4x4 trucks run more power and torque thru and get hell of alot hotter and have Way bigger chain than a snowmobile chaincase . I'm a transmission tech for 34yrs amazing how many Big Diesel pickup manual 5 or 6spd trans run Atf.

Wildcard

It's 2 gears and a chain. Don't over think it. Probably could get away with vegetable oil too. B)
