21 900 Turbo vs 2020 900 Turbo

So I finally got out yesterday and got a chance to put some miles on my 21 Xrs 900 Turbo. I have a little over 300 miles on the sled. I have a Hurricane 195 tune installed with Hurricane weights. Also put a gr/gr secondary spring in it and a 150/300 primary spring in. The sled pulls hard and Rpms are around 7900-8000. Yesterday I ran against my wife's bone stock 2020 900 Turbo and early in the day we raced and my sled would pull hard and beat her by a few lengths. Later that day I raced her and we were dead even. We switched sleds and she beat me then with the 21 by a half length. My question is are the 21s with the new suspension a little slower? Maybe my 21 needs motor to loosen up? I checked my gap flasher and it shows my boost at 14.2. Just thought I would see better results than I did. My sled seems to be running spot on but the results don't really show that.

Having a tuned sled myself and no local snow to ride :( I find it interesting seeing reports of how well the stock sleds are performing compared to the tuned ones regardless of model year. I'm talking dream meter readings or RPM more than anything. Very close on speed in many cases. I have also watched reports of the XS821 on a stock sled with just a secondary spring change run same RPM's as mine with a tune, primary spring, and a bit more stout secondary spring. I do think you are right about the engine needing to loosen up. There are definitely those who have stated the '21 are a bit slower. Probably due more to more weight being carried on the skis with the new skid changes.

I also have to wonder about the need for improved intercooler. I just haven't had enough run time to justify and Whalen hasn't had a sale ;)

Conditions and set up make a difference. The more your sled is tuned, the more finicky it is going to be!

This is the difference IMO. We have no shortage of 2019 & 2020 900 xrs in our group with 2 2021 xrs in our group as well.

The track angle is much sharper on the 21 model. Park a 19 or 20 next to a 21 and the track angle is very apparent. Tune for tune the 19 & 2020 are most definitely faster from what we are experiencing.

Yeah but curious how does that change when the rider gets on the 21 and it sags 5"? Also do the earlier ones have the limiter cranked up different?

I definitely notice the 21 is "tall" in that there is very little clearance when lifted with my Eazymove dolly. Ski or track one end or the other is touching the ground frequently unless held perfectly.

So I would see 16 lbs of boost when I logged my first runs with the tune. Yesterday after a long trail ride we were playing on a lake and I was seeing 14.2 lbs of boost. I was wondering if I have a small boost leak or my intake temps may have been high from the long trail ride. Just learning about these turbos. I ran earlier in the day and it was faster for sure but my sled had sat for an hr before running across the lake.

I just got home from another 150 mile ride on my '21 stocker w/ the 821 and green/green. I'm not looking for a tune. 105 @ 7,800 across the farm fields headed to the trails again this morning. My top speed recall is showing 112.

Honestly I don't want any more power. Its just so much fun to ride as it is, and its so darn consistent. My arms are tired from holding on and my face hurts from smiling. I don't know how I could ask more out of this sled.

Side note too; 15 MPG on my second fill up today. Most of that 75 miles was fairly tame riding though.

I'd start by checking all your couplers and clamps. The throttle body to airbox one is a common "loose" one from the factory that likes to slip partially off. If all those check out and are tight next would be adjusting wastegate crack pressure.

I hear ya I just had my first 577 mile 3 day ride and I'm impressed as is. 100% stock with stock belt. My recall says 107 mine tops out at 7700rpm. And to top it all off the winder I was riding with never got more than probably 30' from me. No lake runs but some grades.
And averaged 16.5 mpg where the winder was 12-13.
I have a tune sitting here that I'm not sure I want to use lol.

All the sleds are basically setup all the same. No change to any limiter strap and we all switch sleds. As for hight if i remember correctly the rear of the 21 sits higher and the front is lower.
Honestly at the end of the day the only difference i can see is at the top end on a lake. Don't spend too much time in that range.

I agree with you. I just have over 400 hard miles on my new 21 turbo x and this thing rips! All i did was a grn/grn secondary spring with 96 studs down the center of track. I raced a young stud on a 2020 850 renegade and was pulling slowly away the whole time. (He was probably 80 lbs lighter than me also. I had every intension of getting a tune but Im leaving it alone for now. Just ran 2 days in the U.p. michigan and it was plenty fast for me

I did a wastegate adjustment from day one. I tightened clamps right away from day one as well but they may have loosened up.

After a good 5hrs of running today I logged a few runs with high air charge temps just to see where we're at and I was still pulling a constant 8100rpm and recording just over 15psi of boost. No wastegate adjustment yet. I wanted to break in a new belt but I was having way too much fun, the belt can wait. It did feel stronger earlier in the morning first thing but it was also cooler outside. Arms are sore tonight as are my cheek muscles from smiling.

if your wg duty cycle is in the 90s

your wg actuator needs adjusting

the oem turbo is capable of making 20+psi

at 90+ duty cycle you should be a lot closer to 20

good rule of thumb is you can make twice the boost of the gate spring setting

Race 1. She let you win.

Race 2. She rode along side of you, yawning (but you couldn't see it because of her helmet) while you were giving it all you had!

Race 3. She beat you...but just by a little so not to hurt your feelings.

:rofl

Lol...No she enjoyed beating my sled way to much!! She would never let me win! She could care less about performance but knows how much I enjoy tweaking my sled and really enjoyed sticking it to me on the lake. All in good fun! I will get it figured out I'm sure.

The question you are really asking has everything to do with drag.

The assumption is the engines (thrust) are equal. The last part of the equation is weight. I'm a married man myself so not touching the weight difference between the two riders with a ten foot pole.

I have a 2021 and had a 2019 and cannot think of any component in the 2021 that would cause more drag than previous years suspensions.
