Hi all, looking for some thoughts on my next purchase. To be honest I wasn't planning on a spring order this year, but I've heard (unofficially so could be BS) that the 2023 sleds could be going up anywhere from 15-25% in price. This is not just Doo, but all manufacturers and also other rec vehicles. I know this stuff tends to go up every year but that's a huge jump which has me thinking about getting in this year.

I'm debating a freeride or BC XRS. I live in Central Newfoundland where we get decent snow most years but no mountains. You have to drive west a few hours to really get into the deep stuff and I'm only doing that a couple times a year.

The sled will be driven some on trail, a nice bit of cross country and sometimes the deep stuff. So my question is do you guys think freeride or BC XRS? I have an expy sport I can ride for most stuff. I want a machine that I can go west on and get into the deep stuff with some buddies and not be slowing them down all day, but still want to use it here for some cross country stuff and occasional trail riding. I was thinking first of the XRS in a 146 x 2 inch lug since it would be okay in the deep and the trail. But some pals said get a 154 x 2.5 inch cos way better in the deep stuff. Obviously not as good on the trail.

So being that I have an expy sport to use as well what do you guys think I should go for:

Freeride 154x2.5
BC XRS 154x2.5
BC XRS 146x2

Guess where I'm going with it is, is the 154x2.5 inch so much better than the 146x2 inch in the deep stuff that it's worth getting it and sacrificing some trail performance even though I'm only in the deep stuff a couple times a season?

Any comments on future pricing you guys have heard about is helpful too.

I live in cape Breton, I'm planning on spring ordering a new sled this year too and I'm stuck between a 146 bcx and a freeride 146. I've been riding a summit sp 146 for the past four years and I love it but if I do a day where it's just trail riding my ass gets so sore because the seats are not made for trail riding. I believe the freerides have the same seat as the summit experts which is shorter so I'd say it would be even worse. That's why I'm definitely leaning towards the bcx. Here in Cape Breton there's no need for anything longer than a 146 a lot even say that they are way over kill but there's days where we can absolutely burry them, the 146 keeps up pretty good in the type of snow we get on the east coast it's not usually completely bottomless but the 154 is definitely better if you were always riding in the powder like in Lewis hills.

What type of riding to you enjoy more? Not necessary what type of riding you do more, but the type of riding you enjoy more. I was in a similar situation 2 years ago. I trail ride in the Midwest with a bit of off trail, but also take a trip to the mountains every year with a group that all ride full mountain sleds. I have a ton more fun in the mountains and off trail rather than trail riding. Even though I only take one trip a year to the mountains and when at home spend more time on trail that off, I bought a sled that performs well in the mountains and the deep snow since that is where I'm having the most fun. I didn't want to sacrifice deep snow performance. I am not into riding real fast on the twisty trails although in the Midwest, I trail ride more than I ride off trail.

I ended up getting an excellent deal on a new 2019 Summit 850 154 with a 2.5" lug in Feb of 2019. I put the extra wheel kit in it and use the scratchers when trail riding and it has never even come close to overheating. It is a bit more tippy on the trails and the clutching is a bit aggressive at slow speeds than my 800 Backcountry, but in the steep and deep, the sled rocks and puts a huge grin on my face.

I was very close to spring ordering a 2020 850 Backcountry XRS 154 with a 2.5" lug which seemed like the perfect sled for my (and still think so) but the price was almost $4000 more than the 2019 Summit, so I bought the Summit.

My recommendation for you from how you describe your riding is the BC XRS 154x2.5 although I know you would be happy with any of your three choices.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the helpful information all. I have to say that I'm leaning towards the BC XRS. The shocks alone make it a no brainer as compared to the X package. I will probably order a 154x2. Now it comes down to whether or not I order this year or wait it out. I was really disappointed in the colour options this year. Was also disappointed Doo didn't make any upgrades to the BC line.

One thing that keeps inching me towards buying this year though is surprisingly the costs for a 2022 are basically the same as a 2021. I think the 2023s are going to be significantly higher due to COVID, I'm hearing all Rec vehicles will be, but maybe that's BS.

Thanks guys and happy sledding.

I have to say I love my BCXRS 154! Absolutely an awesome do everything sled. I Doo have a 2 1/2" track, but I am more of an off trail guy than a trail guy, but I can surely put down 100 miles if I needed to. But since I want more off trail and some trips out West, a 165 Freeride will be my next sled, but I will keep my BCXRS because I have it just like I want it. There are plenty of testimonials on this site to give you a broad perspective of the Backcountry and how well it covers to category of a 50/50 sled. You WILL NOT be disappointed!

I have a FR 154 and trail ride it often as I can ride right from my back door. I didn't buy it to trail ride obviously, but its not nearly as bad as some say. I find it pretty damn decent on the trails actually, considering what it is.

That being said, It sounds like the 154 BCXRS is the perfect sled for you. Especially if you are only riding off trail a couple times a year, the BCXRS won't let you down. The full length tunnel on the BC sleds is the selling point to you I think. The FR has the shorter tunnel and you would need to buy the extra flap for any decent trail rides. It is definitely more nimble off trail, being narrower and short tunnel, but it doesn't sound like you are looking for a sled to ride like that. The BCXRS in a 154 can ride trails all day long and will make you very happy.

Thanks again to all that replied. Decided to get the BCXRS 154x2 in all black. Would have preferred a colour option, but not a fan of this years choice. And after reading some posts I think next years prices are in for a significant increase. Dealer gave me internet MSRP no freight or PDI. Free cover, spare belt and jug of oil. All additional accessories are tax free and free install.

Now my next question lol. I plan to get the deep snow pro bag and the 11 litre Linq trail seat bag. Gas caddy as well. I'd like to get another bag and am torn between the SR21 or the 17 litre sport bag. Looking at pictures it seems like the SR21 can conflict with the deep snow pro bag if I have the deep snow bag expanded and the SR21 is on the gas caddy.

Have you guys noticed any conflicts like this? Basic set up is trail seat bag, gas caddy and deep snow in position 2 just need to figure out which is the best for on top of the gas caddy. Thanks a lot guys.

Happy sledding!

I run either the Ski Doo bag that takes up both position 1 and 2 if I don't need to carry fuel as that bag holds the shovel on the outside of the bag.

If I need to carry fuel I run the 4 gallon fuel caddy in position 1 and a ling bag in position 2 but I need to disassemble the shovel to fit it inside the bag.

I'm in a similar situation, currently have a summit 850 146 which I live but since the kids have come along I go to take my wife's bcx800 more frequently as it's just easier with the kids. So I'm thinking a bc xrs 146x2 should be a good compromise. I'm also in central Newfoundland and the last couple years it's been less trips west and more trips close to home. Hope that changes as the kids get older lol. What dealer did you order from for that price? I checked one and it was a couple hundred more than what you quoted but still not bad. I've been using a slim tunnel bag for years but it's time for a new one, will probably get the bca mtn pro and add the linq mounts. Wouldn't mind having a windshield too for then the kids come along.

I have the SR21 and I'd go with something else. Good decision on sled.... you'll give up 25% on trail to be a beast off trail.

Went from a 19 146 BCXRS 2" to a 21 154 BCXRS 2.5". Even though we boondock as much as possible, we do have to ride trails to get around in Michigan. I loved my 146 but the 154 is a better sled in every situation. I believe I'm faster in the trails, off trail is amazing and the snappy fun factor is still there. I considered a Freeride but decided every mod I would make, seat, T-motion lock out, etc. would be to make it more like a BC. I couldn't be happier with my decision.

Good luck!

One of the biggest concerns on the bcxrs is the running board width, better off going with the x if wanting to stick with a bc. The x has the narrow running boards. If you go freeride then you get the mountain boards which are much better
I had plans to go with the XRS this year for the upgraded shocks-the wider/reinforced boards are what pushed me back to the X package (along with the blue/orange color).
