Bad ground bad cluster? What do you think?

UPDATE: Removed the cluster took it apart and looked at the solder connections on the plug, everything is fine. also replaced the only relay on the sled with a new one. checked battery ground everythings good. it has a brand new battery and it is charging around 12.5 at idle and 14.2 around 2k.

found a used one on ebay will know tomorrow if the entire gauge cluster is the problem or not

Hmmmm. Either ground or stator issue I'm gonna guess. Just by how it keeps checking the dess system and constantly cycling along with changing as you give it throttle

Hey benzman do you notice in the night time that your lights dim with this? Also do you notice once you give it throttle and come off of idle the gauge functions as normal? I have the same issue. Already changed the regulator and my ignition coil. Thinking it's the stator or pick ups

12.5 at idle is lower than a fully charged battery (12.6) look at stator output

I just replaced my x gage cluster on my 2013. Mine was doing all kinds of random stuff . My dealer said they have quite a few of the older ones going bad recently.

Any update on this? Wondering if mine is just bad gauge as well

I plugged it in, it booted up ok but right away it only flashed the reserve light and dess in red, talked to the local dealer and it has to be paired. i just havent had time to load it up and take it over there yet. ill post the result as soon as i can get over there. hopefully this week.
Your gauge is going through multiple self-test cycles probably because the power and/or ground connection is not steady.

It's possibly not the gauge at all. I would remove it and connect pin 9 to battery plus and pin 11 to ground. It should go though self-test once.

If that is the case then you have a wiring issue. Not hard to troubleshoot with a meter.

So then it could be the stator as well. I've gone through my whole wiring harness and haven't found anywhere that it could be grounding out. I'm thinking mine is either gauge or stator

Did the pin out and the cluster doesn't do anything

Update: pin 8 and 11 pin 8 being power and 11 ground it fired up worked perfect and says communication

so now what?

well now ive sort of disassembled the electrical connector and found while im running it if i hold the wires in it works perfectly. so i have to find a way to tighten the little pins inside the connector

found it is the power wire that runs to pin number 9, if i wiggle it around while its running the cluster goes on and off. if i hold it just right it stays powered up and everything works perfect. now i have to figure out how to disassemble the plug and re solder the wire/pin in the connector. the good news is i can return the used cluster i bought. so thats pretty cool. ill snap a couple of photos when i undo the plug.
Final step 3. I assume that after you push that pin back you can remove the pin and wire and re-solder it.

Let us know. Pictures are nice. By the way my shop manual is from Midwest Manuals on ebay.

I like reading these threads when just a little troubleshooting gets the solution!
Just a touch of solder will do the trick here. Finish up with a small amount of dielectric grease inside coupler.

Thxs
Nice find

Mine sometimes says communication so I'll have to look into this

Pins 23 and 24 are the communications between the ECM and the gauge.

Maybe re-flow those pins and see if the problem goes away.

minndave i purchased the repair manual you recommended thank you, i cant seem to find where the wire is broken so i ordered a used harness on ebay for 60 bucks, in the mean time hopefully i can access this manual so i can figure out where that wire goes. then i could run an entirely new wire from the source to the pin im suspecting is the problem. if not ill just take the sled into 1000 pieces and install the harness.

if i could figure out how to upload photos i could share what ive taken so far but i just cant figure it out.
