I am in the process of changing a 440x to trail sled The Warranty changes (2006-3 from Ski-Doo) include the whole range of proceedures by I am questioning the need to wrap the pipe with wool and covers as well as why they recommend installing foam on both side panels and hood in the motor compartment.

I can see the need to get the pipe temp. up but would I be safe to let the sled warm-up and just ride it hard? I don't want to lose any performance.

I would question the need to do that too (wrapping the pipe). Lots of people remove the pipe wrapping on sleds so equipped and have the pipe coated...like the stock '06 440 and report no problems whatsoever. I'd do the engine, carb and wiring changes and run it.

The pipe insulation and foam for the side panels are simply to reduce noise output to make the sled less obtrusive to pedestrians. Ride resposibly around residential and populated areas and live happily ever after.

Thanks for the reply, you sound like you know these sleds. Yes, loud sleds close trails.

I have one more question, when I take this sled up to Northern Ontario how high can I gear it without troubles such as chain length, clutching etc. I have always had a high displacement sled when we take the trips and I'm worried about keeping up with my buddies on the long straights. I know I won't run with the 700/800's but I don't want to be too far behind if I can avoid it.
Thanks Again......
Stock gearing is 21-45.There is no need to go much higher. 22-45 is good. Unless you put on a lower lug track, you won't pull much taller gearing. Just get the clutching right and you will still do 90 +.
Enjoy
PS where do you ride in Northern Ontario? I live in Thunder Bay and ride all around here. We go up to Longlac once in a while.

Thanks again for the info, this site is great for guys that are just learning the tricks of performance.

We ride up around Kirkland Lake, Cochran and that whole area, the best riding in the world as far as I know. We also go to North Bay but the trails have been terrible the last few years. The food and drink is always good though.
Hey im in northern ontario and i just bought an 06 440 and i was wondering what you have done to it i have that 2006-3 document. i was wondering if you got the warranty after converting it? did you have to pay for the conversion or did brp? Im wondering if i should just do it myself instead of bringing it too the dealer.

anyways let me know thanks
ive done the "trail conversion" of my 2006...i didnt use the pipe insulation or the panel insulation, or remove the pipe probe...i did the jetting changes (except for the PowerJet,which is now a 110) and i did the timing curve change (but added a switch to flip between 91 octane and 100+), and ive swapped out the domes to the Low compression.

sorta gives me the best of both worlds...pump setup with reliability...plus the abiltiy to flip the switch...gas...jetting...and domes to be back to a race sled

the pipe insulation doesnt do any more than make things a little quieter.
Do any of you have a copy of the (2006-3 from Ski-Doo) that you are refering to?

Thanks

Jason

thats what im going to do is clutch it!..........i dont know how yet but im going to do it
not trying to be the bad guy here but come on if your gonna buy a race sled, race it and if ur gonna trail ride, buy a trail sled with the x-package because unless ur putting a 800 in it the 440 is s**t
dont even start man......why do you even make comments like that. You know loads of people on here trail ride there 440's. I think its a killer trail sled, but I guess I'm not as cool as you.

I agree with you if you're running lakes or rail lines.

Where I ride you're lucky to see 60 on a trail before you have to brake. 80% of the time you're lucky to see 45-50, nevermind 60...

Now explain to me what the hell good an 800 is? A 440 would be much more fun...

Or its just trail riders pretending they are racing. Yeah... That must be it..

Yawn. If you don't undertand why a 440 in necessary on the trail, you do NOT need one. A 440 guy knows there are no factory alternatives.

So, you are not wrong for asking "why trail ride a 440", but you obviously don't need one or you wouldn't ask. Kapeesh?
Tom is 100% correct. I have never raced snow X, but have had the fastest to the slowest and in between. If you are a racer, then you should be able to appraciate what the 440 is all about. Could you take your 800x package consumer sled and bump the power up a little and go launch it 40ft through the air time and time again? Hell no, it would inplod on itself, BUT you can make a few simple mods to a full race sled and go trail ride it, so all in all you have the best of both worlds.

*%@ is that edit for bad language"?? I just sold my Rev 800 for a 440, and now this guy says I shouldn't have?
Ignore that. I've ridden them all and the 440 chassis is the best bar none. For trail....I should say off trail riding at low elevations it's the most fun you can have on a sled.

Now if you ride at 8-10K....get at least an 800 or more.
Tips on clutching and setup are in my signature. Feel free to add your 06 setups to that thread.
