If I understand your question correctly, you are wondering if you can ride your 2003 440 on pump gas WITHOUT changing the heads (for the occassional trail ride).

The answer is YES!

However, you need to consider the following:

#1) Jetting must be correct and use PREMIUM fuel. Mains will be around 350 or 360 with fuel mixed at 40:1.

#2) Static compression should be around 150. If yours is 175 or something, someone has messed with the base gasket and you may not be able to get away with pump gas. So check this first or ask the original owner, etc.

#3) The timing switch should be taped or secured on the 91 position so you don't bump it while riding. Also, this assumes your black box has not been retimed. Some racers sent their boxes in and had the timing curves changed (more advance). If you bought your sled used, check with the old owner.

#4) You can't be an idiot and ride without care or concern. You should start cautiously and listen to the engine for sounds of pinging or flat exhaust sound (all lean indicators). Take a plug wrench with you and check plugs often. After a little trial and testing you will get your sled dialed and know exactly what jets to run with race fuel and what jets to run with pump.

#5) This only applies to the '03 and '02 sleds...maybe the older ones too, but I have not owned them so I can't be sure. The '04 and new had higher compression and hotter timing curves.

Good luck.
