I've got a 2001 mxz 380f that was running great. Shut it down after daughter was riding it and now won't restart, no spark. I pulled 4 wire plug out of stator to bypass switches, still no spark. Low mile sled with 9xx miles, but it has definitely sat outside uncovered for a good part of its life.

This has the coil/cdi combo that is quite expensive so looking for resistance numbers to test it so I can be sure it is bad.

Thanks

Should only be a single wire you'd disconnect. The BK/YL wire. That is the kill circuit.

The BK/RD, RD, BL/YL, and WH/YL all need to be connected to get spark.

Unfortunately, with the combo units there really are no test you can do.

If you can find one, you might just go ahead and buy it and even if that is not the problem, you'll have a spare for it. They are getting hard to find.

You can test the voltage coming from the stator. All the voltages from the ignition should be around 35 volts or more.

Right, the only wires in that 4 wire plug were kill wires and yellow for lighting.

The other wires/plug coming from stator contained the other colors you mentioned.

I downloaded the manual but haven't had a chance to go through it yet...it's over 1100 pages. So there are no resistance readings available to test the combo units? I figured there would be.

Also, there are few oem coil/cdi units out there, but seems to be lots of the aftermarket ones. Anyone have experience with the quality of the aftermarket versions?

I've never had an issue with aftermarket CDI, coils, stators, or even voltage regulators. And I've used a lot of them.

Does that have D.E.S.S.?

Just a side note. My 1996 was suppose to have one of the combo CDI-Coil packs, but I think the mechanic at the dealer swapped it for separate 1995 CDI and coils. Always appreciated that because it was much cheaper. Wonder if the same can be done for the 2001.

The RER uses the Ducati ignition, why would you want to get ride of that?
It is a solid system, the only issues with then on the earlier ones is the magnets could get un-glued in the flywheel, it needs to be replaced with a more modern one from again a Ducati system, the magnets are encased and do not get un-glued.

I don't want to get rid of that, that's why i don't want to switch to separate coil/cdi.

So are you saying issue could be in magneto? Guess I'll make sure there's voltage coming out tomorrow.

Sorry, I confused a other post with similar question.
Yes it could be in the MAG, problem is that you will have voltage the problem is it will be erratic.

Do you have the shop manual?

Yes I downloaded shop manual a few days ago. At 1100+ pages just haven't had the time to look through it yet.

I've had some home maintenance issues cone up haven't had time to dig back into sled. However I did quickly pull it over and headlight and gauges light up. Does this mean flywheel magnets are likely intact?

Yes it does sound like they would be.
I think you will need to tare the electrical system apart and test each component individually using the specs in the shop manual.
Since sledding is over this year you could pull the engine out and remove the flywheel just for good measure.

Ok will do.

Not quite done yet, I'm heading for one more ride this weekend. Guess we'll see how well my youngest can do with the 600etec since the 380f is down.
Northern NH yesterday....
