1998? Mini Z

673 Views 10 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  rampage
I'm looking to buy a sled for my 3 year old. I found someone selling a 1998 mini z. I didn't even know they were made in 1998... What was the first year for the mini z? Does a '98 mini z have the same motor as most of the newer ones? What years did the chassis and other major components change?

The engines have been relatively the same since they cam out in 1998. The body syles are the same from 1998-2002. The REV came out in 2003. The major difference, I think is that the REV mini has front shocks. Engine, features and performance wise (minus the front susp) they are the same today as they were in 1998.

Thanks. Is there anything in particular I should look at? Any problem areas that required a detailed inspection?

If it doesn't have a wheel kit in the skid you might consider one. It helps with drag and track 'ratcheting'. My son loved to ride in the grass and thought it was cool to ride in the garden to stir up dust........well, it ruined the front cogs and was a beeotch to replace and expensive.......check out the front cogs in the track for wear. They are plastic so can wear easily. The motor is pretty bulletproof, so I wouldn't worry about that. I also got the gear chain tensioner. The stock spring one is junk.
good luck you kid will have a blast....
OK, one more newbie question, do they have a vin and a registration just like a regular sled? Do most people register them?

When I bought it new, the registration was included in the price and I received the stickers. I never put them on as my son only rides on private property up north and in our yard........the sled has never been on the trails and won't be, so I did not renew the stickers when the reg. came in the mail.....
They said it hasn't been started in 2 years, but it ran fine last time it was used. Any tricks I should know to get it started? What tools would I need to clean the carb? Is there a dip-stick to check the oil?

it's Honda motor......should be fine but I'd put fresh gas in.....the oil dip stick is in the front of the motor on the bottom. drain plug on a tube under the front of the sled.....

Actually it is illegal for kids under 12 to drive on the trails in Michigan so it is kind of odd that you have to keep it registered. I registered his when I bought it because that is essentially the title of ownership and we had to switch it from the previous owner.

The carb comes out a little funny in that you have to take the studs out of the engine. You don't need any special tools to take the bowl off and clean it out. You will probably be surprised as to how gummed up it is. the oil needs to be changed, so I was told by a small engine guy, every 10-20 hours. When right it should start on the first of second pull with the choke on. Very important to let it warm up (in the winter) before riding it.
There is alot of people on this site with alot of knowledge to pretty much anything that goes wrong.

w00h00! I got it for $600. I think that's a pretty good deal considering some of the prices in other ads I've seen, it seems like most of them start at 1000 or so.

It ran (a little rough at first) with fresh gas, but after a few minuts of warm up it was idling just fine with no choke.

The clutch is a little noisy and jerky, is that normal or do I need to take it apart and look at it?
