Hello all, I figured I would share my progress with “restoring” my daughters Safari.
This isn’t a restoration more just getting it running. I purchased this last year for cheap. I haven’t done a thing to it until now. My daughter is 13 years old and to my surprise she wants to go snowmobiling. So I uncovered this sled and asked if she wanted this one. She smiled and said yes. So I brought it into the shop Monday night and began diving into it. All the fuel lines were shot. They were stiff as a bird and broken. The grommet for the fuel tank was gone. The in tank line and filter were gone. Mouse nets everywhere under the hood. Tonight I spent time cleaning the engine compartment and installed a new in tank fuel line, filter and grommet. Started cleaning the carbs and installing new seals, gaskets and jets. The progress so far you can sort of see in the photos below. I don’t have any questions yet on this sled, but I’m sure something will come up.

One thing happened tonight though. The “fuel gauge” on the side of the tank was broken. For the time being I plugged the holes. I have a parts Safari that is a 92 (I think) sub model is GLX. It had reverse at one point in its life but the gears were all stripped and the case is broken. Anyways would the tank from that sled fit the Safari Deluxe. It looks identical except that it has an electric fuel gauge that works. The GLX runs but the secondary clutch is shot. I think the spring is broken.

I am not sure, the tank may will fit but an excellent repair for your broken one is this: order 2 90 degree fittings with rubber grommets, piece of fuel line in between. Excellent repair and better than trying to find a used one.

Here’s an old thread with picks of one of mine.https://www.dootalk.com/threads/fuel-level-indicator-for-a-1990-safari-le-377-%C2%A0.1496946/page-2
I was thinking of trying that if the other tank doesn’t fit. Thank you for sharing the the old thread.

I have a dead Safari Deluxe from 93 or 94 in my yard. If you need parts, let me know. She was a runner until a flood in 2013. It sat totally underwater for three days. We brought it back to life but it wasn't the same. Finally the throttle cable snapped, I couldnt find the part, and I just parked it. And that's where it remains today.

Pete, I have the same problem on a 1994 Safari Rally E. Broken fuel "gauge". I tried clicking onto the link you provided but it won't work for me. I was hoping I could find part numbers etc. to do this repair.

I work at a Bobcat dealership and have found a lot of the fuel grommets for Bobcat and these sleds are the same size. Also Bobcat uses a 90 degree fitting for their fuel line. I have 1 in my shop and I am going to buy another one tomorrow. And use clear 1/4 tube as the gauge. If you want I can share the Bobcat part numbers.

The 07-276 part number is common in Canada and USA.

Doofam85 started a new thread with the completed repair if anyone's interested. Nice neat repair.

After breaking some trails with the Expedition, I took the Safari for a rip. It doesn’t turn well, but the limiter strap is completely loose, so that needs attention. It has wide ski skins that helped the flotation a lot. Starts off slower than the Citation 4500 we had years ago, but cruises fine. I haven’t even looked at the belt or clutch yet, a little adjustment should help it engage better. I bought this as an extra for taking friends and family out for ice fishing, bush rides, tobogganing, etc. It seems like a good fit. The wide, non-aggressive track is going to be perfect for setting ski trails, better than the Excel III or Elan and far better than the 1.5” tracks on our newer sleds. Didn’t have snowshoes along so didn’t test in the unbroken deep stuff - chicken!

Mine didn’t turn well either. I ended up soaking the “ball joints” under the rubber cover on the skies and the entire steering system with WD-40 for 1 night then used graphite spray lube on all moving parts of the steering system. It helped a lot. My Safari I bought for my 14 year old daughter to ride and she couldn’t turn it at all to start off and now she can. I have another Safari that is just for parts so if anything goes wrong I have parts on hand. Lol.
