$1,000 worth of Mods???

1405 Views 26 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  coonskinner
Hey the boys riding blue (Yammi's) have been juicing up their rides. Need a little help, making sure the Ski doo stays in front of them!!!

I have a 2006 Renegade 800, and around 1000 bucks to put into her. Where would you spend the money to get the most preformance out of her?? I am not much of a tool turner, but have friends that are.

Thanks.

Should have mentioned my ride is completly stock, as of now.

talk to John at www.sledheadracing.biz or search the internet for the RK Tech site and talk with them. either of these two will make sure your DOOin it right. pretty much what you should do is clutch, gear, port and a head. let me know if you cant find them.

First, Clutch kit!!!! (Cudney or DOOTALK SEARCH).

Drop one tooth on top gear in chain case.

Stud it, probably ~144 studs down middle & new tunnel protectors.

If you have the Precision skis, sell them and get Powder pros, USI, Ski Doo Flex skis or C&A skis.

Might not want to do motor mods until your warranty is up.

Might want to watch for C-46 rear skid shock if you don't have an X suspension.

Learn on dootalk & Drive it.

Hey thanks for the advise, anyone else??
for a grand canadian I was able to doo vforce3 reeds, Cudney Head and rings....but I already had a cudney clutch kit....that should be your first mod and best bang for your buck
I say you should put in Dynamoe^joe's clutch kit first of all. Then put an RKT head on it. That should put you around $750. Then put on an HPS can which is about $280 so that will run you just over 1K.

Or do Big Johns Trail Torquer kit which is like $225.

Ski's and suspension aren't going to give you any bang for the buck. just a little comfort

I do say DJ's clutch kit is a must for this sled though!

clutch it and keep the rest for gas money.or get a boss seat, one of those nice digi temp gauges..hps can, aaen or bikeman pipe....its not worth doing engine mods
..been there done that..

1.Clutch kit( look for a good used one
2. Billett head (" ")
3. Porting ,Seen used cyllinders too.
4. Temp gage

I recomend using all one guys stuff . Mixing and matching is not good in my opinion.

Maybe go with the RK TEK drop in pistons, drop a couple teeth on the top and tweak the clutch. You can improve the clutch without a "kit". Money on a can is not a bang for the buck IMO. You want to go fast not sound like you are going fast.

Here's what I did to mine last year.

Cudney Clutch Kit
Dropped a tooth on the top gear
1/4" Cudney Reed Spacers
144 studs up the middle on a ripsaw

The sled was a beast up to 90 or so, incredible trail set up. It was a lot quicker than the other stock 06's I rode with and was right there with my buddy's 04 Bondi Ported Rev 800, and the other 04 that I ride with was clutched and geared like mine and basically looked like a 440 next to me. I had no trouble with any of the Apex's I ran. I tinkered with the set up a bunch to get it right though.

This year just to try something different I have a Dynamo Joe kit on order and after a lot of back and forth I think I'm going with a RK Tek head and possibly the piston kit along with the base gasket and MPEM re-curve. This will run me a little over a grand.

Have fun.
Sounding good guys, keep them coming. Sounds like a clutch mod is definatly one to doo.

I am going to go with the drop in kit as well. My sled is basically set up the same except I dropped two teeth and added the TPIs to the air box and did a little work on the jetting. This set up works well but I am "expecting" big things from the piston kit. I hope I am not disappointed!

CLUTCH KIT. I hae Cudney kit. I love it. I would do a search and see what kits fit you the best. And it was mentioned to get a used kit. I don't agree with that. I think that you should go new with that.

What kind of riding do you guys do? All trails, all off trial or a combo of both? What track are you currently running and what shocks do you have?

Making it go a little faster won't do you any good if the sled doesn't handle very well. Ergo's make more of a difference in some situation then a slight bump in HP does.

The answer to this question depends on where and how you're riding, if the sled is bottoming out and is all over the trail, then going faster isn't going to help that. So in this case, studs may help, better shocks or revalving and springs may help also.

Please be a little more specific and you'll get some better advice.

I agree with Dog. What do you want to accomplish? Straight line running, acceleration, handling, bump handling, etc. Generally speaking, good clutch tuning and gearing is the bang for buck king and it is relatively simple to do. If your buds have yammy 4-strokers, I doubt you need to worry much about suspension...Out on the lake is a different story ..

Big John @ Slead Head Racing trail torquer kit. Then make sure you have a track and suspension to get that power to the ground. That is just as important. See the post about flipping up rear coupler blocks. You can also reposition the suspension to make the renegades hook up a hell of a lot better.
-Good luck and have fun

He's got an 06 with a Powertek and SC4, trail torquer kit really doesn't apply with a couple of minor exceptions and the SC4 does not require the coupler blocks to be flipped up. It hooks up really well, I can stand mine up with little effort, it's a hell of lot more adjustable than the SC3 was and it actually transfers weight.

I did ask Big John about the TT kit for mine and he was very forth coming and did not try to sell me something I didn't need. Somebody I'll spend money with in the future.

Talked to Moto Tassinari, my reeds are just fine!!!!! lol

Now going back, the first thing you should do before spending your grand is go over your doo engine with a fine tooth comb....I spend a grand on mods last week, and when I took off the top end to do rings, I found bad rings, pistons, PTO seal and crank, which means I out at least another grand....wish I knew that before I spent all my money......):
