My recoil starter grenade'd and the debris damaged one of my pick-up coils and knocked it out of the clips, sled died.  After taking things apart and looking at the pics you can see a little bit of exposed wire.

Questions for the pros:  Do you think it will still work this way or do I need to replace it?  Also, how the hell do you fish the wires/plug through the hole in the case?  do you have to pull the engine, cut and re-splice, etc.?  darn Doo engineers!

Now that the coil is exposed your better off replacing them.  This will come back at you and leave you deep in the mountains if you put them back in.  The wires and plug on the end can be fitted threw the hole in the case, just pull the rubber gromit  on the outside of the case, it's tight, but can be done.  Clean it all up real good and reassemble,

randby,

will the plug still fit through with the stator harness in there or do i need to pull the stator wires through first?

Looks like it has been spin ballanced. Replace it. you just have to remove the pinns from the connector and they pull out of the case.

It is possible but it is kind of a pain the first time you do it I will admit. Check out this video I did on replacing the coil on a Rev, should show you what you want to know.

Just seperate it from the outside case. Try and not damage wires.

Remove the mag housing bolts then use a small flat blade screw driver to separate the silicon glue from the mag case. Take you time.

Just adding too your reply, that this is one of those cases that we can be certain the pick-up coil needs to be replaced. Disassemble the plug on the outside of the bell housing and pry-off the grommet to easily fish the wires. Fortunately this is an easy one compared to most things we see posted on DooTalk. I find the fact that that the OP actually noticed the damage is encouraging.

As an FYI, the 800R P-TEK is a good engine. Take good care of heat, cvt to crankshaft balance, belt temp, oil type and consumption, and it should do well. On an XM that is meant for off-trail, heat and vibrations kill 2S engines. Do what you need to get those things right. Unless you are doing 30 second climbs or miles of deep off-trails at wot, or towing other sleds, it should last a long time. Much can be done without spending thousands of dollars.
