i have 1996 skidoo skandic blowing headlight bulbs and melting heated handle grips.  what could be the problem?  i changed the voltage regulator and it still blows bulbs?

Start my measuring the voltage to those accessories. To be burning headlights I assume it will measure greater than 15.0vDC . If this is the case, then only the VR is at fault since it is the only component responsible for shorting/shunting excess current/voltage to ground.

 

If it isn't doing its job, then either the VR or its connection to ground is at fault.

Bad replacement VR.  Or maybe a bad ground to the VR.   If it is a metal case, then the casing needs to be well grounded.

I agree, if it's an aftermarket VR then chances are it's not doing the job, i've seen this so many times before
