I purchased an 07 MXZ Saturday.  It has a few issues I will address.  The first is the Kill switch throttle assembly is broken and missing.  The thumb trottle is zip tied on but the rest is gone.  He wired in a dirt bike kill switch for the few times he rode it.  My question is, the sled has the bars that are bent down on the ends.  Do I take off the grips to get the new assembly on?  I assume they will come off with compressed air but do I have to cut off the heaters as well and replace them?

You could look at aftermarket aluminum throttle blocks from RSI or PowerMadd, they are 2 piece so you won’t have to cut your grips off. You could also look for a Skidoo one off the older 440X race sleds.

RSI version, even comes with the kill switch.

Skidoo

Those are just a couple options, there are other companies that make them as well.

Welcome to Dootalk!

Thanks,  I did order a stock one already.  It looks like I will be pulling the grips off.

The grips comes off with the open end of a 7/8 wrench. The compressed air is for the later models unless yours has already been fitted with that type.

The wires come out with multilock-terminal housing extraction tool AMP (P/N 755430-2), or very carefully with a small screwdriver which messes with the locking portion of the plastic connector and the terminals never hold as well.

I bought the insertion tools to install both styles of grips, the straight grips and the ones with a J-hook. Personally I don't like playing with the J-hook type and replace them with the straight ones. The instructions are found in the Subsection 01 of the STEERING/FRONT SUSPENSION of the shop manuals which are available to everyone.

I think that Ditchbangr zx's suggestion to use the RSI throttle block is a good idea, but it depends on your success in working with the oem parts. There is nothing clear-cut-and-dry when it comes to this stuff. I expect that you will likely learn like the rest of us, the hard way through doing.

Here are a few pieces of advice before installing the replacement throttle block that you got. The first one is to go to the FAQ to see how to clean the contacts prior to installation. The second is to make sure to prep a good clean environment for when it comes time to find a runaway spring. You will understand when the spring goes boing and gets lost lol  Third, the oem style works good when the contacts are clean, but even BRP recognized that it wasn't the best style and replaced it with the older push/pull type for the newer sleds.

It is worth repeating that there is nothing clear-cut-and-dry about any choice. If there is something missing, just ask. If you find a good way of doing it, then please post with pictures and detailed procedure. There is a lot of good stuff on DooTalk because folks go through the trouble of giving back to the forum.

Thanks,  That is all good information.  I did watch a youtube video on how to clean the kill switch and how to be careful about the spring.  I have only been on this forum for a day and am happy with the response.  I am usually on Benzworld forum helping others like you are doing with me here.  I have a 73 convertible that I did a Small block Chevy conversion with Turbo 400 transmission.  Steve

Steve, a 73 convertible is out of my scope, but...... I can assure you that it is perfectly in line with many of the members on DooTalk. If you can share the build on DooTalk, at least in parallel to the Benzworld forum, I am confident that you will make many us happy to share you enthusiasm.

I am not kidding. DooTalk is particular forum that is so tight nit with the snowbelt, that anything is welcomed but politics and such. If you are not convinced I will gladly post threads, but it will be way too long and I should not have to. We have finally crossed over to the spring/summer projects, so car builds is perfectly inline with what I believe most want to hear about.

There is a good degree of allowance for you to weave car pictures in your own thread (this one), but if you want to share your build on an independent thread, then the following is the appropriate sub-forum. Here or there, I hope you post to get our thoughts away from sleds. Sleds are cool and DooTalk never sleeps, but let's get real this is the beginning of May 2021.

Daag,  Thanks for all the forum info.  I tried to post a pic of my sled but this site does not make it easy.  I gave up after a few attempts.  I am used to drag and drop.  If I was able to post pics I would be posting pics of my bars and the riser asking what is correct and what looks incorrect.  I am going old school and heading up to the dealer to look at how it looks on their sleds.  Steve

I have installed the curved grips with air and a bit of pushing/twisting and they go on well.  Don't be intimidated by this job as it is relatively easy.

Daag: I was always curious about those install tools, do they work well or are they a waste of $$?
