Alright, so first off I'll start by saying hi, and appreciate everyone's feedback and advice in advance!

So rather new sledder here, but just sold what I was riding and picked up a new-to-me 2012 MXZ XRS. My cousin has a 2014, I rode it enjoyed it, thought it handled much better than the 05 Vector RS I was riding, so made a leap.

I had a buddy go check it out, but now that I own it, comparing it around and something is missing when it comes to the front KYB suspension. So I'll start there, I took some pics, the piggyback appears to be missing an a screw in place!?

Looking for advice and direction on what I should do, and should I attempt whatever it is myself.

To give a rundown on what the seller shared with me:

  • Has MBRP trail can
  • Heated shield plug
  • Supposed new 1.5" track
  • New hyfax
  • Top end rebuilt
  • 4K miles on it

More questions to come!

Those are stock X shocks, the previous owner swapped them for the piggybacks for some reason. My BIL did the same thing to my adjusters, used channel locks to spin them. Ugh!

yah he hosed you on the shocks, or it's not really an xrs, just has xrs plastic. Look at rear skid shocks, should be rezevoirs on those. I believe it should say on vin tag on tunnel if it's an xrs.

I'm furious over this on your behalf. That's a straight up screw job. I'd be doing whatever I could to get my money back. If whoever you bought it from lied about something as blatant as that, who knows what else may be hidden.

Ugh, not what I was hoping to hear... I’m going to go out on a limb and guess without changing out those shocks completely, no way to have them converted to the piggyback ones?

As far as identifying if it’s a true XRS... rear looks like the one pic, and it doesn’t have the typical sticker plate on it that clearly states what it is, just the VIN. It does have the quick adjust and all the body panels, and the graphics are the XRS ones... hmmm...

And that trailer is was only used so I could fit it in the garage for the time being, it has pull start on it and planning to add electric start to it.

It is an XRS, wider running boards. Many people swap out the front shocks from XRS to X to lower front ride height and keep it flatter in the corners. That may be what happened here.....

Or they weren't getting asking price so they sold the shocks for $500 and took these in on trade and lowered the price of the sled by another $500. Sled looks like it's had a rough life.

It seems like people buy the sled, then ask questions... Very rarely do they show pics of the sled, then ask our opinion before looking/buying it.

WHY do people buy this stuff??? Your buddy that looked at it for you must be a idiot to recommend that. Go buy your vector back. I feel youve got a long road ahead of you. Good luck

I’m not sure what you both are basing these comments on, 3 limited pictures? Guy came here to ask a question and learn about his sled and he gets called an idiot. Nice welcome.

No one called him an idiot so don't start unnecessary crap. He purchased a sled without knowing exactly what he was looking at is all. People are just pointing out that the sled isn't everything he'd hoped it was. I feel bad for the guy but it's probably too late to do anything now. I'm sure the sled will be fine for whatever riding he does, but this may also be a learning experience for him too.

...and maybe he bought it on the cheap? If you look closely at the plastics, the sled is very clean for a 12. Its missing twenty dollars in seat plastics, big woop. Front shocks, if on the cheap, big woop! I like projects.

Exactly. I see a pretty good looking sled that as far as I can tell can be used and if required updated. I presume since the quick adjusts are there the rear shocks are right. Says the track is newish, and mileage is decent. Front shocks can be replaced, rebuilt or used as they are. No biggie.

My point was, the guy is panicking that the whole sled is a bust, and 2 posts did nothing to ease that.

The sled is absolutely still rideable, but he seemed pretty excited about having an xrs. Obviously the front shocks being changed out really takes away from it being an xrs. Hopefully the rear shocks are factory xrs shocks. I was just saying if I was him I'd be PO'd that someone passed off a downgraded sled, I dont care how much of a deal it was. He came here asking about it so obviously the previous owner didn't tell him the whole story.

The XRS shocks are majorly stiff so the shocks on it probably ride better for most people. Not that big of deal.

If someone came back to me after they had a chance to inspect and potentially ride the sled prior to buying, the conversation wouldn’t go all too well. It is what it is. That’s why sellers want to meet in the Walmart parking lot to seal the deal because some psycho is going to come back to the sellers house and raise hell about some shocks.

Those shocks could have been on it for years and years. It’s not the sellers job to educate the buyer. Perhaps 2 owners ago, someone may have taken out an A arm and bent the shock. So instead of spending a grand on new front shocks, the guy finds a perfectly good set of shocks for the front.

So when you have an XRS, now it’s mandated to replace parts that are specific to the XRS, that cannot be used on any other sled? Change out a track and you have tell the buyer that the part number on the track is not what came stock on it? That must be explained? In could go on and on. C’mon.
If you don’t know what you are buying or bought, I’m sorry. That’s the buyers fault.

All this shock talk is simply outrageous and how people get so up in arms about them lately.

The problem is the seller knew the sled didn't have xrs shocks and never disclosed it to the buyer. So basically it's ok to screw the guy over because he wasn't educated enough to know what he was looking at? If the guy comes back wanting his money back because the seller screwed him, the buyer is the psycho? Yes, shocks matter when you're selling an xrs. I guess we should be ok with the previous owner putting x package shocks on an xrs and waiting for someone whos not completely educated on these things to come along and buy it? If it's not "mandatory" to put the right parts on I guess the OP should be thankful the seller didn't just bolt 18" of aluminum tubing in place of the shocks.

Are you the one who sold this sled to the OP?
