Is anyone affected by the shortage in construction materials and computer chips?

 

For once we can forget the politics because this is planet wide. Thankfully I have two cars, but I was looking forward to buying a pick-up truck this spring. Everything in autos and construction appears to be skyrocketing out of my price range.

 

Today I was looking at new lots. The price hike is at least 40K. Two by fours that were $4 last year are now $12$! I can't even buy plywood because there is none. In hindsight I should have been able predict the hike and buy my roof shingles 6 months ago when the price was still normal. Fortunately I can buy a couple of years by gluing membrane to the roof, but that's not what I had in mind.

 

I want to hear how you are addressing this shortage.

 

Please keep the geopolitical and ideological views out. I am asking for your experience in helping get through a bad situation.

I went today to local lumber co. for a sheet of 7/16" OSB board, $33, said forget that, it wasn't that important that I needed it.  I am planning on building a rack for our kayaks, down by the lake, hate to see the cost of that.

Automotive is facing line down situations everywhere. When they are being hit, you know it’s bad. It’s hitting everything, raw materials capacity shortages, production capacity shortages, sea freight capacity shortages, and air freight capacity shortages are what I’m actively hearing about in my industry.

Could be interesting when it come time to deliver sleds.

Friends of ours own a local building supply company (4 locations). I was talking to one of them a few weeks ago about the crazy high prices, they said they're hearing it will be 3 years before things start to settle down a little.

I'm sure glad we don't have any big projects on the schedule.

got front addition on the camp here going on. Timed it right end of last summer. Got 40 pressure treated boards for $22 a board for 16’. Didn’t need 16’ but 12’ were $10 more. Now see there $60-70 a board.

What???  Oil is only ~$60 per barrel.  It was the same price or higher through most of 2017, 2018 and 2019.  

 

This supply and demand issue.  Not price of oil issue.  Everyone has been sitting home and saving much more than they normal would.  Things are opening up and they have money to spend but their isn't production capacity to support the demand.

 

I just don't see how inflation doesn't go through the roof based on what we've done in the last 10 years.

What I cant understand is logging has been gang busters in my area. These guys are going 7/days a week, even seen a few trucks running on christmas and new years. The local lumber mill/paper mill runs 24/7 and has for the last several years.  

 

I think this whole lumber/supply issue is manufactured much like the "salt shortage" of winter 2014 (iirc).

Prices going up, and prices skyrocking cause if a supply and demand problem are to separate things. OSB has nothing to do with the pine beetle.

I'm interested in what you have to say about the lumber or any shortage and how it affect you or folks you know, but not about your geopolitical views.
