I have searched hi and lo but cannot find an answer to this so thought I would ask here. When a sled is sold privately can the registration numbers be kept on the sled? Sometimes the previous owner has put nice graphics on it, would be a shame to peel it off and start again.

I know with cars the plate stays with the owner but not sure about sleds. I recently sold a sled which i never put the numbers on. So do I use those numbers on my new one or can I use the numbers currently on the sled? Provincial website offers no details on this. I haven't been to Service Ontario yet, and sometimes the good folks working there don't know all the rules either.

Any ideas from the group?

Mark

To solidify your answer, the above is correct. Numbers stay with sled.

Yes as others have replied.  The first time a sled is registered in Ontario, be it brand new or coming in from another province etc. It will be given a set of plate stickers that will stay with it as long as it stays in Ontario. You can use these plate stickers or custom numbers that are up to their specs.

Thanks for the input folks, much appreciated. I managed to give the new owner of my old sled the number stickers for it before he went to Service Ontario so it worked out well. It did come from Quebec so the numbers were newly issued but I hadn't put them on. I'm also pleased that I don't have to remove the cool looking numbers on my new sled.

I wish this info was easier to find online.

It’s in the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act of Ontario. For anyone else looking for it.
