Seller just sent me a picture of a receipt.  He had the water pump professionally replaced about 500 miles ago.  At that time, the shop had a compression tested at 130 mag side and 135 pto side.  Aren't these numbers supposed to match?  Wouldn't the shop have said something to the seller at that time?  I never checked reverse when I gave it a test ride.  If I have time this afternoon, I may go back and look at it again.

The numbers should be as close to each other as possible, 10 psi is pretty big difference. If compression now is really 105 and 95 it wouldn't idle good or run good. I would get another tester and try again. You obviously want the sled so comes down to what you want to pay, but I agree with everyone else and would walk away from that sled,

800's aren't my thing but $3,000 sounds like a good price if it is clean.

The fact that water pump went likely means it is going to require at least a top end with those low compression numbers.  On top of that, if crank is out of spec, which many of these sleds have issues with, then it may require a bottom end as well.

I can speak from experience with my 2009 800R - that is exactly how things went down last season for me and it won't be cheap.

The fact that it had a waterpump  gear failure would make me run.  How long did it run with on oil pump turning either?

I traded it because a fresh 4 year warranty was too attractive for me to turn down.  Chances of me running that 2017 for 4 years without problems were slim in my eyes.

There are still 17s developing the coolant pump issue as they age. It was a wise choice.

Strange why ask for opinions only to ignore and go back to look again? I wish you well, just factor in the price of a new short block plus labor with it.

For me to buy a 2008 800 it would have to be bottom barrel cheap AF, so when it blows I could part it out and get my money back. Otherwise it's a lose lose.

It is crazy to think the total cost of these old sleds. $3K purchase + $2K engine = one heck of a down payment on a new sled. Wife is not happy, and kids are grumpy for a new reason, the sled doesn't work. Dad, can't you fix it?

The 130/135 could be from a top-end with the old cylinders that was done by the previous owner, or over time one cylinder lost more than the other. The difference is not the biggest deal, but it is now 105/95. I won't even buy below 150 psi which is about 140 @ 2000 feet. A properly running two stroke keeps its compression for thousands of miles. It is nice to have new coolant pump, but the fact that it needed to be replaced without a full engine rebuild is bad sign on so many levels.

I have seen many older skidoo motors (running well) with 145-150 PSI. You sure seem to want this sled, but it feels like you are trying to convince yourself that there is nothing wrong. As was already said, if the engine is getting ready to blow, are you willing to spend another $2K (or more) on top of the buying price?

Thanks for all the replies.

I do want this sled.  I know the issues, but the look and feel of this beast (when running properly, I get it) and affordability is what I'm looking for.  I came back home and double-checked my compression gauge (it's not a cheap one) on both my 98's.  I had readings of 130 or 131 on all the cylinders I own - and saw good looking spark plugs at that.  It made me feel like I was getting pretty accurate readings on the 2008 I was looking at, plus put a smile on my face that I'm not out anything since both these sleds are running really, really well. Ditch banging is ditch banging...

We both talked about lowering the price significantly.  For those paying attention, in MN, the recreational vehicle prices have skyrocketed, even in a year without much snow.  I could easily double my money on both my old sleds, and triple on the 2 place trailer they get hauled around on.  We got to a price I could live with, and either fix or buy a new engine for the 2008, but in the end, the seller said he would just keep it, fix it, and look to sell it next year.  Maybe I'll take a look at it again someday.

So, I'm still looking for an affordable ($3K - $4K) Ski-doo.  If anyone has any suggestions on a model/year for me to search for, let me know!!  I mostly trail ride, lake ride, ditch ride, and a little off-roading.

Meanwhile I'm enjoying what I own outright, no payments, and they could detonate tonight and I can walk away...still happy.
