I have spent more time than I would like to admit searching forums and other outlets trying to figure out my problem.

I have a 2011 Summit X 800 Etec. It is very hard starting ( requires throttle input ) and it doesn't exactly "bog", it feels like it totally cuts power throughout the rpm range. It tends to do better when warmed up... but the first 20 min of trail riding is BAD!

Once warmed up I can sort of work around the cutting out issue, just have to be careful where I put the sled. However, fully warmed up, if I shut the sled off for more than 10 min and it begins to cool down... it might take 6-10 pulls with throttle input to restart.

I have changed the fuel pump, changed inline fuel filters, new plugs ( clocked correctly ), all new gas in the tank, just checked reeds this weekend as well as the Rave valves. Engine was rebuilt a couple seasons ago by previous owner... compression seems really good.

I did get a code at the end of last season for exhaust temp something or other... but I can't get it to come back up.

This was a cheap sled with some miles on it... so my dilemma is if I drop it at a shop and it takes $1000 to fix it, I might as well have dumped it and started over.

Any suggestions I can try at home? Thanks!

Kinda sounds like a stator to me. Maybe the capacitor.

Do you have the manual? There's something pretty comprehensive tests in there for those two things, without needing budds.

Jack, I do not have a manual. But I'll do some digging to find out testing procedures. I asked a guy about the stator and he said when they go, you are usually dead in the water... but that was just from past experience.

Thanks!

Sounds like the battle I fought with a 2010 600 etec last winter. I chased the stator idea, changed it no improvement, changed plugs, coils, plug wires, swapped in a different computer, new fuel pump, none of that helped. Got rid of the sled before changing the part that in retrospect I wish I had started with - exhaust temp sensor....

"Usually" is dead on.
Stator & capacitor tests are easy and free.

In my experience dealer "techs" are a f#$king joke. Seems everyone you talk to has a sled misdiagnosed by a dealer, like they just throw parts at it.

Mine did that when I didn’t have enough weight in the clutch, something about the crank spooling up to fast would cause it to cut out.

Voltage off of the capacitor positive and chassis ground and easy enough to check with two people.

30+ Vdc when the engine is cranking over.

~60 Vdc when engine is running.

No updates yet, will tackle it this weekend! I'll make sure to let you guys know. Every bit of info from forums has 1 - the problem 2 - possible solutions 3 - the thread starter never posts what came of it! Drives me crazy
