Just replaced my battery in 2005 gsx 600 HO and every time I try to hook it up the 30 amp fuse blows!

I know I had some trouble with the electric start a few weeks ago (starter wouldn't catch) but I don't think this has anything to do with that.

Even when the kill switch is on, it just blows the darn fuse on hook up. The battery is from batteryclerk, it's an ATX20H. it's not the exact match but should be fine.

Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated.

Follow the positive wire and make sure its connections are good. Maybe you disconnected it from the starter this early spring.

Did you fix starting problem, or did you replace battery assuming it was weak? When you say "starter wouldn't catch" do you mean it would not spin fast enough to fire out gear on the bendix? Do you have another battery to test with? It may be a defective battery, stranger things happen.

Check your wiring. Probably have a short somewhere.

The battery was very weak. I even got the battery light. The starter would make a noise but the engine want turning over and after a few times wouldn't even try to start just click. I tried boosting with my car and even then the starter made a the noise of spinning without catching the motor. After a few times it started but once we removed the jumpers, it died.

I pull started no problem and then it dies

Now with the new battery nothing at all happens, no lights, no nothing because of the blown fuse

I just thought of a simple way to isolate the battery.

Could I not just hook up a car battery to the sled and if the fuse doesn't blow then it's 100% the battery?

Thanks

If the fuse is blowing regardless of the battery you have a short to ground or a very low impedance from one of the electrical components.  If you understand how to use an electrical test meter you can check the ohm rating on the positive lead to see what you see.  If its zero you have a short.

Yes but it's 30amps

What electrical component draws 30amps?

As I said its probably a short to ground could be a bare wire,  maybe a mouse or rodent got in there and did some chewing, etc..  You will have to use a test instrument to track down the problem.  None of the item should draw 30 amps unless they are failing creating low impedance which increases amp draw.

Turns out this battery has the poles reversed... Wrong battery I guess.

Do I jump off a bridge now or later?

Easy fix. How deep is the water below? Maybe just a few self slaps across the face, especially if you are not a strong swimmer.

Welcome to the dumb mistake club!

If it makes you feel better, one mistake is securing the positive lead from the battery to the negative lead of the starter solenoid.

If you came out of this experience with no other short or long term issues, consider yourself lucky in your misfortune.

Best mod I know for any sled is to wire a Volt Gauge to the battery. You can get ones with an on/off switch that also supply power to a USB port. Flick the switch a few times during the off season and you know if the battery needs a charge. With it turned-on while riding, a reading too low means it isn't right and you need to change something now to get you home or to the trailer.
