I am thinking about buying a used 850. It would likely be A 2017 but maybe a 2018.  How many miles are these engines good for?  I know there's a gen 4 forum but there is not enough traffic in the summer to get much info there.  Thanks

I can say how many miles they are expected to last from real tests prior to first year production. However I am not looking for the backlash given the online failures. Personally I pay more attention to librarians, which is a metaphor.

FYI, buying from a dealer with a minimum of warranty that begins from the snowfall is a big difference than buying with no warranty.

I don't think we really know yet.  In general it is better than previous Doo two strokes.

The rings ride in a cast iron insert in the aluminum piston similar to some diesels so the ring grove doesn't easily get beat out like a grove in a typical aluminum piston. you have some pressure lubrication to the crank journals.

One drawback is you can't replace rod bearings as they don't make a service part due to equipment needed to align the fracture rood cap. You can replace pistons and rings.  And you can replace crank and rods as an assembly.

If I really wanted to know; I would call some one like Big John or Trygstad who build a lot of Ski-Doo engines.

It doesn't appear like a lot of them have been rebuilt by the general public yet which is a good sign.

It's a crap shoot,I,ve seen them blow with 60 miles on them ,and have seen some with over 10k on them .BRP oil could be the secret to the ones with high miles on them ?The ones that blow take out the cases .

Sorry but there been plenty to go down with doo oil. Like I said last year dealer told me skidoo said 7 to 10000 miles. Some will go more some less. I love mine. I wish after market companies would sell the cranks but I was told by mcb that right now doo makes it just about impossible. Scott if you read this please tell us why no one is doing the 850 doo cranks

We lost a 2018 at about 1000 miles and the dealer said that the 18’s seem to be having the most problems.

The subject line says rebuild.  From my fly on the wall perspective reading along I see more fail and replace than overhaul/rebuild.  Just in this thread alone read what these guys are saying:  Blow up, not really rebuildable except a short block or a full crank assembly.  Most seem to buy new with long warranty and get rid of them before the warranty expires.  The lesser educated consumer buys used and eats the cost when they do grenade.

I've steered clear of them as a result.

I would like to hear about some mountain sleds piling up some mileage. I think a motor that is tortured more often would be a better indicator of top end wear, assuming that is what OP is getting at?
