A friend of mine recently purchased a 2014 renegade 800 etec, and had an engine failure 40kms into his first ride on it. I've since torn the engine down and found a catastrophic failure in the PTO side cylinder. I'm having a hard time telling what may have caused the failure due to the condition of whats left. Theres lots of broken off ring chunks stuck to the piston and in the exhaust, and lots of metal thats gone into the base. Mag side cylinder and piston seem to be ok, very mild scuff on the centre side of the piston. I've got a short block on the way from CV tech and the blown engine already sent as a core but I'd like some opinions on what may have caused this before the new motor is re-installed. All oil lines were attached and not kinked, injectors full of fuel, and water pump is good. See attached images, Thanks in advance.

Nice... Cracked intake boot. Make sure to replace both.

I’m doubtful about the boot being the issue, no cracks upon inspection, and I’ll do a leak down test when the new engine is assembled to be sure. From what I’m gathering it could have been a ring failure, I’m not sure if these engines were known to have rings break or not, only 1/3 of it was left melted into the piston, with the locator pin still intact.

Have the injectors cleaned. And check the voltage when it is back together and running.

BTW: Amsoil is good for everything, including making french fries. It's perfect in every regard and tastes great.
In fact: Re-using Amsoil containers to store Walmart oil gives the cheaper oil special properties not available to the average consumer.

Was there any oil in that side upon teardown?

Base gasket ,Common on pto side .The groves mean a lack of lube from antifreeze wash .

Not to be critical, but didn't the rider start to feel loss of power well before the failure got to this point. It's pretty bad.
