I'm looking at making a run out to the Black Hills, SD this winter and was wondering when the best time for riding is.  Any help is appreciated, thanks!

I feel that sometime in February would be your safest bet. President's day weekend gets pretty busy though, the governor's ride is that weekend. I've had to cancel late Dec/early Jan plans because of low snow a couple times. Hopefully the snow will be like it was last year, it was a great year!

Watch the snow - it can be hit or miss...  Sometimes a little further west can get a lot better riding depending on the year.  We have the Bighorns on our 'to do' list.

Thanks for the replies. I'm going to plan for a February trip and stay clear of President's day, then.  We were thinking about staying at the Deadwood Gulch Resort.  Ride from the door and their rates are fantastic (only 2 of us are going) and the free shuttle into Deadwood is a nice bonus.

I've been to Togwotee Pass 8 times and we're looking for something different this time.  The Black Hills are a lot closer for us and with only 2 of us going, considering travel, lodging and not having to rent a mountain sled it will be a lot more economical.

Thanks again!

I really enjoy the Black Hills, especially with the wife and kids. Definitely look into Spearfish Canyon and Cement Ridge. The night life in Deadwood is pretty good too. Have fun!
