Image Resize Tutorial

Resizing Images for posting on DOOTalk.com

A common question on the DOOTalk.com forums is "How do I post pictures?". The typical reason that pictures won't post is that they are larger than the forum size limit. Most forums limit image sizes to 70K, which will allow for a decent quality 640x480 image. This document takes you through the steps, using some FREEWARE software, to take a very large image and compress it to an acceptable size.

NOTE: This procedure can also be used to create your Avatar Image with a maximum size of 10K and 192x128 pixels.

The Software:  IrfanView is an excellent Freeware utility for viewing and manipulating image files. The term Freeware means that it is Free for non-commercial use. If you intend to use it for commercial purposes, please contact the author for licensing info.
That is the legal mumbo jumbo we feel compelled to share since we are a Software Development Company ourselves.

You can download the software at www.irfanview.com. Once you download it to your computer, double click on the setup file to install the software.

Resizing Your Image:

1) Launch IrfanView by finding it on your start menu or from the shortcut placed on your desktop during the install process. You will start out with an empty workspace.

2) Open your image by choosing File - Open from the IrfanView menu. Navigate to the location of your image, select it, and click Open. Notice the information displayed on the preview shows that the original image is 1.3MB and 1600x1200 pixels.

The image is now loaded in the IrvanView workspace.

3) Resize your image by choosing Image - Resize/Resample from the IrfanView menu. Select 640 x 480 pixels from the list to the right of the window and click OK. Make sure that you have Preserve aspect ratio selected at the bottom of the screen or your image will become distorted.

4) Prepare to save your image by choosing File - Save As from the IrfanView menu. Make sure you choose the Save As option and enter a new file name so that you do not overwrite your original image.

5) Compress your image by selecting JPG - JPEG Files as your file type and selecting a quality of 40 and Save as progressive JPG option from the Options Box. Click on the Save button to save the image.

7) Verify the size of your image by locating it with Windows Explorer and viewing the properties by clicking the Right Mouse Button, or open the new image with IrfanView and verify the image size in the preview window. You will see that our new image is now 44K and 640x480 pixels...perfect for posting on DOOTalk.com. If your image is either too large or of very poor quality, you can try different values for the Quality setting.
