.S. auto sales will likely drop an additional 30% to 40% and may never recover to previous levels with the disappearance of cheap oil and credit. This could lead to 25 million fewer cars on the road in the U.S. in five years, according to Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce's (CM) World Markets report.
"Detroit's biggest problem isn't that it's producing the wrong type of vehicles but, rather, that it's producing too many vehicles - far too many," said Jeff Rubin, chief economist at CIBC World Markets. On top of that, Rubin noted the easy credit that fueled U.S. sales earlier this decade - about two-thirds of vehicle sales over the past decade were debt financed - is gone.
The CIBC's report comes just days after J.D. Power & Associates and Edmunds.com projected bleak February auto sales numbers, continuing the plunge that began in September, as both firms lowered their 2009 sales forecasts. Auto makers are expected to report February sales Tuesday.
CIBC projects that American consumers will only buy eight million to nine million vehicles annually over the next five years, roughly half of the number bought over the previous five years.
In addition, Rubin said the only reason gasoline is cheap is that "no one can afford to drive." When the recession is over, he projected gasoline prices will return to the $4 a gallon seen last summer. As a result, those rising prices will likely lead Americans to adopt European driving habits, he said. In Europe, people generally pay higher gasoline prices, own fewer cars, drive less and take more public transit.
seems the CIBC is with you

Ya this Moron Said 2 Years ago 100 dollars for a barrel of oil . This became a reality when the speculators jumped in around $70 dollars and drove it up to 147. Thats when the car companies got in trouble no more big trucks and suvs out the door. They where building vehicles people want until 4 dollar gas. Mean while you have the Governments on both sides of the boarder telling us its supply and demand ya right where all a bunch of sheep. Oh yeah some one blew something up in the middle east lets raise it another 15 bucks. When have they not been blowing "edit for bad language" up there?
Housing crisis again created by bankers not to smart to loan money to people who can't pay you back! And do it on such a scale that you create a situation that puts people who can afford them in a zero or negative equity position.
Someone should tell all these bankers and investment houses to "edit for bad language". If you guage there qualifications on performance none of them are QUALIFIED to comment.

It’s a self fulfilling prophecy all the same analysts and bankers that created this mess are now spewing FUD while lining there pockets. They should all be in JAIL.Don't believe me I have 147 dollar barrel of oil for ya!Unfortunately it has happened, but it was only a matter of time.
The top 5% have most of the money, they make the rules, and the rules are made so they make more money. They've now got it all.
Where did that money come from? The 95% that don't have anymore to give to the 5%.
And here we are.
The only way to fix this is to take it mostly back from the top 5% and put it back into the 95% hands.
By the way, where the hell is Hillary going to get all the money she's going to give to that other country she's visiting?
Please. Screw them, it belongs here.
