Topics I've Started

600 etec Skandic WT RPM

29 January 2013 - 03:06 PM

I just went for a quick run on a nice long bog(may or may not have seen the groomer lately!).  She very quickly found 8200 rpm's and 120kph on the speedo (didn't have GPS on board).  The rpm's settle back to about 7800 after a few seconds at WOT and speedo sticks at 120 no matter what I tried.  Repeated runs were all the same with little to no track spin. Clutching?  Thoughts?

Melting RAVE Valve Cover

20 January 2013 - 10:16 AM

I put my machine in to the dealer the other day to get her hooked up to check for faults/codes.  I had a dead plug and was worried something more was going on, especially after my power loss last spring.  Turns out, everything was likely related to the plug.  While there, the tech checked for melting of the reed valve cover just above the y pipe and found some deformation.  They have seen this in the past and the simple fix is some reflective foil tape which he put on for me.  To be honest, I'm not entirely happy about this but don't have time to come up with another fix.  In the meantime, I'll run her like this for the winter but will keep an eye on it, especially later in the spring when the temps coming off that exhaust get alot higher.  Has anyone else seen this before...I don't recall a post but may have missed it.

Mounting a Shovel

10 January 2013 - 11:09 AM

Space is valuable and a shovel uses up alot of it.  Anyone have any good mounting ideas?  I just got my hands on a nifty bracket that allows me to mount it up front out of the way and it seems quite solid.  The pan of the shovel is wedged between the bumper and a bolt I have up there that keeps the aluminum tree basher bar on(to keep trees away from the LEDS).  It does rub plastic in one place so I'll have to keep an eye on that.

Ice in gearbox

09 December 2012 - 03:59 PM

OK...stupid me.  After sitting all summer and fall in the shed, I finally decide to get off my deriere and drain the chaincase/gearbox and freshen up the oil.  Yes, I know I should have done it last spring.  Lift the back end a little, put the drain pan under there, find the right allen key, pull the plug and nothing...zip...nadda.  Panicking now I start to wonder if I actually put her in for service after break in last year.  Did the tech forget to put oil in?  Would it survive this long w/o oil?  Stumped, I crack a cold one and contemplate the money I may have to spend because of my own stupidity.  Lighbulb goes on...it's still below zero at floor level in the shed.  I poke some bail wire up there and voila..oil.  Lotsa clean oil with  no filings.  I put a ceramic heater on it and in a minute it's running free.

So I obviously had a bit of water that settled and froze.  I have flushed it well with diesel and am satisfied that all is well...but I am wondering if I should crack her open for a look.  I only have 27/2800 kms on her but am worried about corrosion now.  I plan to run some gear oil through before I top up to ensure diesel is all out of there but I have my doubts now and that will probably be on my mind for a few days.  Thoughts?

Cains Quest 2014

07 November 2012 - 02:10 PM

Yes we have to suffer through another whole year and a half before the next race but.......the tentative (and rough) route has been posted in the CQ website.  No Kuujuak this time around but it will take in all of southern Labrador.  This should prove to be easier on the support teams, open things up a little more for the fans and present the racers a new opportunity to explore different parts of the Big Land.  I personally can't wait until the next race and will probably spend the better part of the next 2 winters doing some scouting.
