Hey Chris,
My brother and I were in a very similar situation three years ago. We bought an 06 440 MXZX racer and took turns on the weekends in the trail class. One would race Saturday and the other on Sunday. The following year we picked up an additional 06 440 and a race trailer, and each raced Sat and Sun in the Trail and Sport 500. I was 22 when I got started and there were people older and younger than me in the class. As payup said, you don't need a trailer, but def makes things nice when the wind is blowing and temps are below zero. I spent a lot of money getting into the sport, but I wouldn't trade any of it. There is nothing like the thrill of winning your first race, or flying through the air. If you have any questions, dont be afraid to give a shout.
To answer your last question, I would shy away from the XRS, get an 440 MXZ X racer or RS. The XRS does have some additional bracing, but does not compare to the actual race chassis's.
