What to do, What to do...

10 April 2013 - 11:45 AM

Rode my new to me XRS about 700 miles this winter. 300 in WY and it ran great. Then some ditch and trail riding here in MN. The last ride of the year was Easter and it was 40 deg. outside. I expected the sled to be a dog in those temperatures, but my wife riding her 600 sdi was taking me in a drag race by 2 lengths or more for a half mile, then I would catch up. Obviously same time and temp and even the same gas in both sleds.

The sled has 4000 miles on it. I believe it is the original crank, but can't confirm. The top end has 2100 miles per the previous owner done by Trygstad. I just did a compression test last night and both cylinders have virtually no loss cold vs. hot but one cylinder is about 6% lower than the other side. I also did a leak down test on both sides separately and they passed 5psi for 10min. With the y-pipe off, there is no damage the piston side or top that I can see.

Now I think my clutches are in need of some TLC (bushings, springs, pucks) but I can't see that causing my all of a sudden loss of power since it ran great in WY a month earlier. So the ultimate questions are: Does anyone have ideas on what was causing my loss of power, and should I just go for a full engine rebuid? I'm thinking of doing the crank, pistons and rings just for piece of mind. I would love to do an 860 or 872 but funds are a little tight with baby 3 coming in the fall and trying to build a house soon.

800r leak down test question

07 April 2013 - 09:30 AM

Im trying to do a leak down test on my summit. Reading through the procedure in the FAQ in the trail section and have a few 800r specific questions. I do not see a pto bearing elbow vent. So is there no way to test the inner seal? Also, when I pressurize the engine I'm getting a very small air leak in a fitting in the line going from the case to the rave solenoid. I can't clamp it before the fitting because the line is rigid and I'm afraid of crushing it. I suppose I can take the line off and cap it for the test but will this cause me running problems on the sled? It is a super small leak even under 5psi of pressure in the engine.

98 vs 96 FIII 600

20 February 2013 - 02:02 PM

I could have searched for hours, but don't have time. My old man has a 96 FIII 600 with a blown engine. I found a 98 FIII 600 engine for sale. Will they work for a swap? motor mounts, electrical connections etc.. the same?

Thanks
