In Topic: 800r crank broke

02 March 2011 - 12:33 PM

I wanted to tell my experience of a broken crank.  My '08 x model summitt 154" had exactly 1800 miles on it when it broke the crank 180 degrees.  Amazingly the sled ran to get back to the truck 17 miles.  both pistons going up and down at the same time.  It cost me $2500 to have anew drop in remanned engine.  Yes out of warranty.  Warranties should be by miles not years!!!!!
I am very dissapointed to buy a $11,000 sled and in 1800 miles put another engine in it.  It runs fine now and I used it to tow my freinds '08 x model off the mountain last weekend after he blew his motor with 1900 miles on it.  His back up sled worked well yesterday.  It is a 2007 Summitt with a new engine 2 years ago at about the 2k mile mark.

Kind of rediculous to not warratny this crank issue at anything less then 10,000 miles!

Dan the end of the 2-stroke engine in snowmobiles is in the very near future. BRP can not get over this problem with the 800R and other 2 strokes they sell. The sledding industry is running out of customers to sell 2 stroke sleds to. Like GM with the first electric cars they stopped selling them because they could not make any money after the sale for themselves or the dealers so they killed the electric car. BRP does not want the 4 STROKE SNOWMOBILE because they go on and on and on. No sales of parts service etc. compared to the 2 stroke. Yes GM has brought the electric car back it is part of the future like the 4 stoke is the future of the SNOWMOBILE like it or not. Most people I know are going 4 stroke they are done spending money on a failure 2 stroke sled.

How many peeps that have had crank bearing issues and blame them on the isoflex greased bearings have used an air or electric impact wrench to remove their clutch for service, and or pounded on the clutch puller bolt when it is tight with a hammer to pop the clutch off.

These two actions can brinell the bearings and cause failure some time in the crank's history.

I would wager to bet that 85% of the guys who lost cranks due to crank bearing issues have used an impact and or a hammer on the clutch puller which is a definite no no!

Explain how the bearings fail at the same rate on the Mag side? Also at the same time the PTO and center bearing didn't fail on engines that never had work done on the MAG side.

I have over 17,000 km on a 600 mxz and 10,000 km on a 500 mxz and many, many more miles on all sorts of sled over the years and beat them with hammers and impact wrenches and never had bearing failures.

This story needs to be understood ROTAX isoflex bearings on the cranks are to small and the material used to make the seal are not working. They never will work and the problems will continue with the 800R etec and cost a lot more to repair than the regular 800R.

it cant be clutch if it runs as good as it does when its cold. i just "edit for bad language" the neighbors off and it a huge difference when its warm. did comp check again and its 140 cold and 130 warm. didnt have room to get accurate plug reading. just changed coil and plug wires no difference.(both plugs wires were broke in the boots) i am runnin orange/red 166 clutches cleaned before the season. thanks for the input guys keep it commin!!!!

"it cant be clutch if it runs as good as it does when its cold." I wouldn't say this if I were you.
I changed out the original Secondary bushings LARGE AND SMALL and this problem went away for good.
The sled seemed to run very well cold but get it hot and not so good, changed the bushings and springs
and it did run much much better hot or cold.

I have about 1600 km on my 800R Drop in kit. I will say it is running great. I did a new crank when I first installed the drop in kit so after about 400 km the power was much better. I am happy with it.
