In Topic: crank bearing-when to replace

15 March 2013 - 01:03 PM

Wow, you guys are really getting ahead of yoursleves.  I have a 03 REV600HO which I converted to a 700 about 3000 miles ago.  it's still running the stock crank (cases have never been split) and I just turned 11,300 miles.  I feel like I'm playing with fire every time I ride it, but it runs oober smooth and strong.  I know the crank is on borrowed time but I sitll have a hard time spending $550 to replace a crank that works just fine.  On the other hand, my buddy has the same setup as me and his crank BROKE at just over 12,000 miles.  All bearings looked good, but the pto side rod lower end pin sheared off (while at idle, strange).

I'm sure you could make them work but it will take a bit of testing.  I think the MXZ700 used the non hooded.  that might be a good starting point.  I'm sure there is someone on here that would know better though.

One thing to check is if you actually replaced w/ the correct carbs.  I went to replace mine last year and I ended up getting bodies with the non-hooded nozzle.  So, I ended up doing a mix match of parts to use my old bodies (cuz I couldn't get the nozzles out w/o wrecking everything) and then put in the other carbs slides, linkage etc...  I'm thinking an easy oversight like this would throw your calibration way off.

I have a very similar stock 700 cylinder set up.  I also geared down a bit.  I think one tooth smaller on top, possibly two but I don't remember.  Also, I have a 1.75 non studded track.  The thing pulls like a rock star to 80.  Will cruise there 1/2 throttle all day long and be happy.  Give it the other 1/2 of throttle at that speed and it'll suck way more gas, sound like it should be faster, but will jump up to 87 and that's all.  I figured it was just my clutching / gearing combo.  I was in Houghton last weekend w/ my brothers '10 p-tech 800 and two other '11 E-tec 800's.  Mine has waaaaay more bottom end corner to corner grunt in the twisties but they will walk me in the open.  The one e-tec was doing 108 on some ROUGH train beds.
