I had a 04 440 with an 800 motor making 155 hp and ran with the short cooler for two years running engine ice for coolant and never had one bit of problems.  I even grass dragged this way and had no problems.  I would say you should be good with the short cooler.

I have to say with pretty much no winter here I have gotten the gun bug as well.   I bought an ar-15 just before hunting season and recently bought a 9mm carbine and a 1000 rounds of ammo.  Just love shooting the guns but not as much as riding.

Maybe the pump is getting stuck open somehow on the inside.   Thought I read somewhere on dootalk about the pumps getting stuck open.   Good luck.
