It's oxidation corrosion, not necessarily caused by ethanol but any moisture that could form on the surface. Metals oxidize over time, especially at joints and in crevices. It will also occur when two dissimilar metals meet, such as where a steel bolt passes through aluminum.
A little dielectric grease works well to prevent it, plus it makes it easier to get your carb/airbox assy back together. ![]()
