1970 TNT775 recoil starter

20 February 2010 - 06:50 PM

I have finally gotten my 1970 TNT 775 running again. However, because of the compression I cannot keep starter pawls in the recoil.  I have rebuilt the pull starter at least 5 times so far.  Putting a new starter pully on it and a total of five sets of pawls so far.  I can only get five or six pulls out of the rebuilt starter before it strips out again. Now I am thinking about replacing ther entire recoil unit to see what happens.  It just seems like the steel in the aftermarket pawls is too soft and they wear out in no time. When the sled was new I pulled that starter for 30 years without any problem, but now its become a nightmare.  Has anyone else had this problem?  Does anyone have a used recoil starter for sale? Thanks

I took it apart and noticed that the dogs on the recoil and the splines inside the pully hub were worn. Actually the splines inside the pully hub were totally worn smooth.  I ordered a replacement pully and installed it. Within about 50 pulls the splines inside the replacement pully, which btw was made of aluminum, were worn out again. I have been told that a steel pully is no longer available as OEM. Does anyone know where I can get an original or a good used to replace the worn out item. Thanks.
