I am back in the snowmobile game after a few years off. I just bought a 2008 MXZX 800R with low miles and wondering what I should do to upgrade. Not really sure where to start since I have been out of the game. No budget really, just want to be fast and fun. Most of my riding will be ditch banging and trail riding with buddies who are sled heads. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks :righton

he said "no budget really"

Well, he can't upgrade if he doesn't have any bit of a budget. Where he wants/intends to upgrade, he implied that he has a budget, whether that be a small or very small budget ($200-$500 or $500-$750 or $750-$1000 etc.)

I would suggest a clutch tower brace or floating the secondary to save belts. Grip-N-rip bracing is cheap protection.

I say try riding it first and then see what you want.
If it isnt taking off the way you want go with the clutch and maybe suspension. If it feels like your loosing power maybe the reeds and an exhaust. After some seat time you might want to upgrade the seat and bar riser to fit you better. Depending on your current track you might want to look at that

Best upgrade for sure........stay on the forum for the next three months and learn about your year and model. You may chose to fix any inherit problems. Before you buy that turbo kit!

I would say get your shocks serviced and revalved to your weight and riding style (you did say it was a X). You say your friends are sled heads if you want to keep up with them you need a good shock set up. The sled you have is fast but if your sled bottoms out all the time you CAN'T go fast. It just sucks when your suspension holds you back.

Don't waste your money on bolt-on mods. I was like you and wanted more power, and a few knowledgable guys on the forums that tried it all told me not to waste my money on bolt on mods. Being hardheaded, I had to try it all for myself anyways. They were right. Last winter, I sent my motor to get ported and head work done, and that's where I finally seen a nice gain. I also recommend a good clutch kit or at least the springs and helix from the '10 800r. There are a few things I'd recommend to get before any motor mods to help reliability. Upgrade the QRS roller bolts and rollers before they cause $1000 worth of damage to you clutches. Upgrade the clutch tower to the '10+ as I believe they beefed it up. And get a tower brace, like the Racewerx one. I would also get the Grip-N-Rip a-arm braces to strengthen that area. Other than that, a Doodoctor floating QRS mod was one of the best things I've bought. Better belt life, and so much easier to work on the sled if needed. Any questions, just ask.

Like monster was saying, I think the terminology and expectations get outta wack. People think they can bolt on a y-pipe, reeds and the sled will be 10 mph faster, ain't gonna happen. Some bolts do and will work in responsiveness in the throttle but very little gains if any. Truth be told the factories do a pretty good job of giving you a good performing sled and there usually is not a whole bunch of room for improvement like years ago. Especially if you are taking the emissions and noise factors into consideration. If you specialize in one type of riding there are better chances to make improvements.

WoW!! Great stuff guys. I should mention that it came with a MBRP Can and a 2.5" ripsaw track. What are the best options for clutch kits? Im sure that will be my first option besides rebuilding shocks. What is a clutch brace? my last sled was a 01 MXZ 600 and i didn't do anything like that on that one.
