It might have a crank seal leaking. That would cause oil to spray on the backside of the primary making him think there is supposed to be a gasket in between the primary and block sealing it.
How much of a pain in the butt is that to do?
EDIT: Oh darn have to remove the motor to do it..

If its just an outer PTO crank seal, then you can do it without pulling the motor.
The older sleds didn't have the seal retainer, so to doo the seal replacement properly I believe one should split the cases..but that's just what I recall.

you can do it the same way that you put crank bearings in a dirtbike. Put the seal in the freezer for a few hours, then when you are ready to put it in, heat the area around the seal with a heat gun, then pull the seal out of the freezer and smear a good high temp RTV sealant around the out side with your finger. With the case hot and expanded, and the seal cold and shrunken, you can tap the seal right in with a big socket of correct size PVC pipe. It's sounds a lot harder than it is.The older sleds didn't have the seal retainer, so to doo the seal replacement properly I believe one should split the cases..but that's just what I recall.
