I found the chassis I wanted at a garage sale this morning. Total cost $5 and drive 15 blocks with the truck to pick it up.

Posted Image

Front Power Stroke front end with Shimano disc brake and manual caliper.

Posted Image

The crank is a Shimano. Gear are little rusty, but I can fix that.

Posted Image

Center rebuildable shock w/850in-lbs spring.

Posted Image

It has the cheap Shimano Tourney derailleurs, but they are going to be upgraded to Shimano Deore derailleurs, Shimano 14-28 TZ Freewheel rear sprocket, Vuelta Zerolite handbuilt wheels with Maxxis Minion 26" X 2.5" tires.

Just Saying all your pedaling force will be used up in that crappy suspension. You need to spend at least a $1000 for a proper functioning rear suspension.

Thanks for sharing. I happen to think you are wrong. A pivot rear suspension, is a pivot rear suspension. What makes it crappy is the shock/spring setup.

It is like any other suspension. If you put Adrenalin shocks in a SC4 suspension it does not perform as well as the same suspension with Zbroz shocks.

They are the same suspension. What makes a $1000 rear suspension that has one pivot point and one shock mounting point better than another with the exact same setup? The shock.

I am looking at several options right now. Revalving the current, FOX DXH, Rock Shox or a Marzocchi.

Got the bike torn down today. Big load of stuff going to Cool Concepts tomorrow. Pretty much the only thing I am using is the frame.

The shock was toast. The shaft was bent, the shock was completely empty of any fluid so I threw it away. I am going to look at a FOX Float RP23 tomorrow. I think that is the route I am going.

Posted Image

The front fork is OK, but kind of consumerish. Kind of like the difference between an Adrenaline shock and an X-Package shock. I just ordered a new RST Air Suspension front fork from ebay for $219. It has the remote lock out.

Posted Image

I also bought a good used Shimano Deore XT crank and front gears from ebay.

Posted Image

I got a good encapsulated bottom bracket from Kenli.

Posted Image

I also got the front brake. I went with a Shimano hydrolic caliper:

Posted Image

I got a new 7 speed Shimano freewheel from ebay:

Posted Image

Those are all things I got of ebay today.

I still have to get the following stuff:

The ZeroLite PRO wheels with Vuelta hubs

Posted Image

The Maxxis tires:

Posted Image

The shifters:

Here is the rest I am waiting for auctions to end.

The threadless headset:

The Shimano Deore XT rear brake caliper:

The new pedals:

The Shimano Deore XT front derailleur:

The Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur:

The BBB riser:

I have other things to get, but those are the auctions I am in on right now. I am also going to head over to Northtowne tomorrow to see what kind of pricing I can get from them.

As well as bad frame geometry, terrible bushings, welds, and the cheap, heavy materials used in a throw-away department store bike.

A few things I noticed... that freewheel will not work with those hubs in the new wheelset. Need a cassette type for those hubs. Also, the rear derailleur will have issues mounting with no dropout hanger on that frame. The cheaper derailleurs have the hanger attached to them and mount to the bolted on axle. The xt is designed to mount right to the frame, which this frame isnt made for. The new QR hubs would not likely hold it in place anyway. They will have a hard enough time keeping from moving in those dropouts alone, as they are meant for bolt on axles.

The welds are fine, if aluminum is heavy then I guess it is. I don't see any difference in this geometry than some of the expensive bikes.

The freewheel will be just fine with the hub. Posted Image

The hub with the bolt holes is for the front disc brake mount.

You are correct. I will be making my own bracket for the XT derailleur. I have been known to machine a few of my own parts. Just a couple here and there.

I am trying to keep type of build under $500. That is my budget for this bike. I may go over with the FOX rear shock, but I have passed up several FOX floats on ebay for $70-80.

I try to help people who think you have to a ton of money to do this kind of stuff. I do my stuff with used parts, ebay and machine a lot of my own parts. I don't think what I am building will have any trouble keeping up with the guys I ride with.

You both are right, it isn't the best of the best. It is past year's products, and alot of it is used. 80% of this bike will be used parts. It isn't the most expensive bike. I don't really care about it being one. I want something that I can ride 5 miles to work everyday, and back home. Then have some fun on the occational weekend.

Sorry Maize, I've been where you are and done the build up on a department store frame. Its not worth putting the money into. The rest of my comments are compatibility facts, which you should take as help as it will save you from buying the wrong parts on ebay.

If you bought a "freewheel", like the one pictured in your 3rd post, it will NOT work on this hub. This is a cassette hub. Incompatible. Freewheels are one piece and will thread onto the hub. Cassettes slide on and use a locking nut to hold the gears on. Just look for a 7spd cassette instead...

I may be touchy due to my insomnia kicking in. They diagnosed me with asthma a couple of weeks ago. They have me on Advair, Singulair, Nasocort, Claritin and the combination has been keeping me up until like 2-3am in the morning. I go back Wed to see if we can change some stuff.

Anyway. This is the type of bracket I was going to make for the rear derailleur:

Posted Image

I am also machining new bushing from bronze so they will be self lubricating. The rest of them I am making slots for grease and drilling and tapping for grease zerks.

Worst case scenario....if it doesn't work out that well, I can buy a used frame and transfer all the parts.

Sorry, again, for getting cranky.

The freewheel sprocket I got is a cassette, the hub is also a cassette.

You can see the cassette in the middle of the freewheel sprocket:

Those splines in that picture are for the tool to remove the freewheel. Take a look at my picture of both, you can see those splines on the freewheel. This is definitely not a cassette!

I will double check that. I have to talk to the guy tomorrow about shipping, so I will double check. Thanks for the heads up.

You should seriously stop this project now. That frame was manufactured for about $3 in China using the worst technology and materials available. Please just go to an independent bike shop and purchase a complete bicycle. I managed a mountain bike tailored independent shop and worked in the bike industry for 5 years. I can say with 100% certainly you are wasting your money and time by building a poor handling and unsafe bike.

there are alot of really good frames you can get with much better pivot point rear suspension for not alot of $$,,if you look around net for closeout pricing

even thou the frame is kinda cheesy,it should hold up for casual trail riding or urban fun and "exercise",,but going uphill/that rear suspension will rob your pedaling power unless you have a lockout on the rear shock or pump it up

i ditched the total knobby tires for ones that have the centers kinda flat and doo not suffer offroad

i like the pedals you got and i have old XTR and XT stuff on my old hardtail Kona for my old self
If somethings not broke,i will fix that!
