Is there a simple way to change the oil in the chaincase without getting the old oil all over the tunnel .

I pumped mine out of the check plug. Probably leaves some in there but it is sure easier than poppin the cover!

I too was very apprehensive about changing the chaincase oil in my 3 sleds. It seemed like it was going to be a messy operation. I finally dove into the project and was pleasantly surprised. I put a drain pan under the running board, loosened all the chaincase bolts and just cracked the cover open at the bottom. This procedure was recommended by many of the blogs I have read.
The oil runs into the depression in the running board and out the hole at the bottom of the depression. After the oil drains the chaincase cover can be pulled, wiped clean and inspected. There was very little mess, the depression, in the running board, can be cleaned up easily with a rag. I had thought about trying to suck the oil out of the case with a pump or syringe. This is not necessary, the above procedure is clean and easy.

Good luck.

You will never really know what is going on in there if you don't pull the cover. Glad I did.Found this.

Thanks for the info. I will back off the bolts, pop the bottom and let it drain overnight then remove the cover and inspect the chain, tightener, etc.

I've never done a chaincase oil change on any sleds without taking the cover off. 5Min clean up afterwards and its back to a shine.

I've done it both ways and prefer to suck it out rinse with diesel fuel a couple of times and fill, would pull the cover if they'd use nuts with bolts vs self tappers, just don't trust that soft metal, looses a little thread every time you spin them out. just my preference.

I just spend a couple bucks on some new non-tapping bolts...don't have to worry about stripping the case holes.
Like mentioned above, you can't tell what's going on inside there if you don't open it up for a look see.

I just get the same size/length, add a dab of blue loc-tite, and tighten to specs. Never had a problem in the rental/tour business I doo maintenance for (20+/- sleds).

Before I changed my bolts, a "must do" IMO, I ran a tap down all the holes. You would not believe all the crud that came out. I don't use lock tight, I just crank them in pretty much as hard as I can with one hand using a nutdriver, not a ratchet. They only have to stay tight for 3 months of riding, then they will be coming out again.
