My wife has an 04 MXZ with a cupel of tears in the upholstery. I was planning on patching it this summer or recovering it but new covers are over $80. I looked at seat upgrades and liked some of them but they are even more expensive. Then last week on a ride by the dump here I spoted an old seat so I picked it up. My goal was to have storage under the seat, and free up space on the back also for more storage, I also wanted her to sit a little higher bnecause she like the ride of the newer sleds where you sit up more like a motorcycle.

It was in rough shape but all I wanted was the part that goes around the gas tank. I cut it at about 1/3 of the overall seat about half of the part you sit on and then built the back part using some scrap Aluminum and 3/8 plywood. So far I have only a few bucks in rivets,so it has really cost me next to nothing. I also have the marine grade vinyl that I had already bought to repair the original seat.

I forgot to mention that I am going to support the back with a metal hoop of some kind that will bolt to the tunnel.

is the plastic piece thats shaped like the gas tank under the stock seat foam? because im thinking of modding the stock seat but i dont want to get the cover off and realize its not what i thought.

Ya that black plastic is the part that goes around the gas tank and I kept the stock hard foam and soft foam for that front half. then added some ontop to get the ride hight up to where I wanted it.
Progress has resumed, I couldnt find any foam out here in our village so I am improvising with carpet foam. I hope it works.

Looks like my 06 440X seat I put on my sled, a little shorter. I would like to see how this turns out, keep the pics coming.

oh cool, ya i noticed you said village.. and i was thinking you had to be in alaska, then i saw your name togiak. and i was like, wait a minute... so googled togiak and sure enough.. but i actually live north to you, in Galena.

well I just did the first mock up on the machine and it looked pretty good. I welded up the rear support for the seat (not in the pic). I also took out a little foam in the rear because it looked just a little high but it sits very nice. I think I will need to put some handle bar risers on it, how big can I go without getting extended cables? The cargo room is going to be fantastic. I am quite pleased.
