since about mid febuary i have been using a full gallon of oil per tank of fuel, no leaks or such, and you can tell its burning more by the excessive smoke its doing, i have checked cables, adjustent settings and such and no issues, set at 18 mm,... i do find that at the oil pump when the throttle is let off that oil pump lever goes back about 3/4 of the way rather than all the way back, if i grab it with a plier it will go back a 1/4 inch or so more, might need a new return spring... could this be why its burning that much oil??, or is it something else, thanks for the help, full syn is not that cheap to waste

Oil pump cable frayed? Not allowing full return? Can you unhook cable and see if it returns I know pain in axx to do. Just a thought seen more than one with this situation

I haven't ever had the oil pump out of the 800R but if it is infact the same as the HO, the oil pump mod adds a bearing to the shaft for smoother operation. If its a motor you plan on running for quite awhile its a worth while mod, otherwise not really gaining much in terms of reliability.

Yes the return spring has likely lost its tension though and thus not returning. If you are going to put a new spring on, might as well put a new cable on, or atleast during the summer. They do get gummed up inside and can contribute to more friction in the whole system.

agreed, your cable is probably starting to fray, you can unhook the cable from the carbs and see how the pull is, should be very little resistance

cable was replaced a year ago, and shows no signs of fraying yet that i can see, just never thought that the return spring could throw out the oil consumtion that much by not resetting... i will look at replacing it

The center seals on your crank are leaking, this is letting the oil that is used lube the water pump and oil pump gears leak into the piston side of the motor
You will need to rebuild the crank

One possibility, but need to do a leak test to confirm.

It still could be the center seals. If these leak you will not contaminate or loose coolant. But the oil in that pump gear cavity can enter cyl. Are the plugs still both the same color? If they are obviously lean towards the pump. If one is dirtier than the other it might be a center seal.

It's not the water pump seal that is bad so you will not see any coolant in the motor, it is one of the center seals on the crank.
I hope the return spring works for you.
How many miles are on the motor?
