583 is a strong motor. 670 is way more powerful. I would go with the 670 if you can find one.

TTT for ya, I also am curious of reliability on the 617, I have an S Chassis summit I`m putting back together for a sled for my wife, stripped down a 91 Mach 1 with a good 617 and all needed components and have motor setting in the chassis everything seems to work out great so far, need to find a reaseable 136 rear skid for mine too

Good Luck on the project

a 809/780 is a big heavy tripple that would ruin the sled 583 has lots of power but the 670 HO has more but the big difference between the 583/670 is fuel consumption

fuel is Not that big of a deal. Mostly it depends on your thumb and the position(s) that it likes to take.

We took a run out Lake Louise to tolsona and back to LL a couple weeks ago. I was in and out of the throttle on my Summit 670 on the 65 mile run. My wife drives pretty steady on her GT 500. We filled up after the run. She used 5.5 gallons and I used 7.3 gallons.

She got 11.8mpg and I got 8.9mpg.

The 670 pulls noticeably harder than the 500.

the tripple in the s chassis would not ruin it they are abviously heavier than the twin, but the power of tripple is awesome over a twin, my buddy has a 780 modded s chassis tripple sled and that sled will out climb and power Any new sled (No turbo`s) but still pushes 180+ hp, man what a fun sled....

I also had a 700 tripple in my s chassis and it would smoke the 670 I took out of it, both engines were stock.

The 617 was a great motor. The only problem is, there wasn't near as many of them made as there was 583s and 670s, so it's harder to find parts for them if you need them. As with any Rotary Valve motor, see if they will let you pull the cover to the RV and look for damage in that area, which can happen when a piston or crank lets go. If the part of the case where the RV sits is damages, it can be fixed, but it's not really an easy fix.

I picked up a set of twin pipes and can for f chassis that should work great on the 617(thanks craig marchbank)it has an after market can and stock pipe on it now but the can is way too loud(sounds kinda cool though B))got all the puzzle pieces now except for the track-goin to put some work on it this weekend(taking motor out of the mach1 and stripping down the 96 chasis should be a good start :Cheers

If you can find a good 809 or 780 I would absolutely do it, but that may cut a little deeper into the budget. As far as 583 vs 670, A later model 670 would be nice. 670's are good motors and make good power, but a triple will make more in stock form. And no, in no way will it ruin it.

EDIT: sorry, just saw you got the 617 pipes already. well you have my .02 anyways

Power to weight a 617 set up right is hard to beat. That motor always comes up in that back in the day story. Rember that 617 doing 72 mph on the radar across the water with Steve riding it at 9300 rpm @ 5000 ft?

I'd go with a 500ss (597cc's) very reliable, good torque, parts are readily available, and the engine responds really well to mods, porting, overboring, aftermarket head, etc, and thats only if you want more later. Just a stock 500ss is a great motor just as it is.
