Had a new motor (short block) put in my 2008 800R Renegage a few weeks ago and need some input on the amount of oil used. Put 115 miles on it last week (first trip since the new motor was installed by my dealer) and it used over a half a tank of oil in the 115 miles. This seems a little extreme. I know they put a couple ounces of oil in the gas tank before I picked it up, but would they of set the oil pump higher with a new motor for break-in? Should I have it adjusted once the new motor is broke in? Not sure how many miles is considered break-in on a new short block. I just do not want to gum up my rave valves etc. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've got the same motor with 2000 miles on it and that is more oil than mine would use on a similar trip. Mine would maybe need to be topped off 1-1/2 to 2" from top of tank, always thought in teh back of my head mine seemed good on oil, but still smokes plenty and plugs look good. NOt sure how many miles for break-in but may wnat to have that oil pump adjusted once you confirm break-in period.

When they put the new motor in the would of made sure that they set the oil injection back to the factory setting which is usually rich. The stock setting on mine runs about 18:1 so I gradually lean it back to about 35:1. Did they by chance put on a new throttle cable as they are notorious for fraying down by the oil pump and I swear the new ones are a milimeter or 2 shorter which would cause it to burn more oil.

Sounds like it is adjusted rich to me. Probably not a bad thing for the break-in though. If you check the fact section in the forum the correct setting with a photo of how to measure. You will have to remove you exhaust can to get access to the cable but if you have basic mechanical skills it is not a difficult task to take care of yourself.
