I don't think that is an accurate analogy at all. You CAN ride ungroomed trails. You might not like it as much, but it's not like the trails are gone. If the rides at Disney are closed, or Mardi Gras was canceled then you wouldn't be able to partake in those activities. Just because the trails aren't groomed to your satisfaction doesn't mean that the trails are not rideable. And I don't have a dog in the fight because I didn't put one mile on my sled this year. I don't care if there's moguls (I almost prefer it). I just don't like driving over marginal amounts of snow, having to go over water holes, bouncing off of rocks, etc. and the only cure for those problems is more snow and no groomer in the world can make that happen. It's unfortunate that you didn't enjoy your experience on the Tug Hill, but there were lots of places where there was literally NO snow. When the snow was as marginal as it was on Tug, and it's the only place to ride, the traffic is going to be high. Especially so since the lack of a good base made good riding opportunities limited at that. So when you've got marginal conditions in the first place, coupled with enormous traffic which eats up the snow it's really hard to be able to groom and keep up with the wear. It's unfortunate that you don't like riding on ungroomed trails, but I'd argue that with a relatively snowless season like this one you largely have a choice of ungroomed trails or no riding at all. Trails don't have to be groomed in order to be ridden.

Hey man, I really hope you cool down over the summer. This season has been stressful even for us locals. We have money wrapped up in this sport too and this winter was the worst ever. It was hard for me to time any rides between the warm spells and the less than 12" storms we received. Between work and the rain and the warm temps, we all took a hit on this season. Bugsy rode maybe two times, I rode a handful of times and I live 5 min from Montague. I saw my grass in the yard over 5 times this winter which is unheard of. There was never a base established and if it was it was only a 6 inch base at best. I just cleaned the sled up long before April and this will be a first for me before the trails officially close. Do not expect grooming miracles when there is a crappy winter and try and get up here during the week and spread your money around without all of the stress of the moguls and traffic. Your hobby shouldn't be this stressful.
BTW- see attatched pic. I was down to the plastic on left ski. Seasonal rodes were that bad.

All I can say is if you think you can do it better join the club and become their #1 groomer. I think you'll soon find what a thankless job it really is.

The XP is the most fun sled ever made - but I like my XR more.

I know in some other areas, of the state, the grooming schedule is published and coordinated with neighboring clubs. So if you pick the right days, you can ride from one side of the county to the other with consistantly groomed trails.
Let's face it, not a whole lot of people actually live year-round in Tug Hill. And of these few people, in this remote area, how many have the time to work all day and go out and groom all night?
I really think there needs to be a way to have paid groomer operators in areas like Tug Hill. I am sure that there are plenty of good people up there, that would rather groom all winter and get paid, then sit around and collect unemployment.

In a normal year I think you'll find most of Tug Hill is on a fairly coordinated schedule. This year was anything but normal.I appreciate the countless hours that clubs and VOLUNTEER groomer operators put in.
