I don't think that is an accurate analogy at all. You CAN ride ungroomed trails. You might not like it as much, but it's not like the trails are gone. If the rides at Disney are closed, or Mardi Gras was canceled then you wouldn't be able to partake in those activities. Just because the trails aren't groomed to your satisfaction doesn't mean that the trails are not rideable. And I don't have a dog in the fight because I didn't put one mile on my sled this year. I don't care if there's moguls (I almost prefer it). I just don't like driving over marginal amounts of snow, having to go over water holes, bouncing off of rocks, etc. and the only cure for those problems is more snow and no groomer in the world can make that happen. It's unfortunate that you didn't enjoy your experience on the Tug Hill, but there were lots of places where there was literally NO snow. When the snow was as marginal as it was on Tug, and it's the only place to ride, the traffic is going to be high. Especially so since the lack of a good base made good riding opportunities limited at that. So when you've got marginal conditions in the first place, coupled with enormous traffic which eats up the snow it's really hard to be able to groom and keep up with the wear. It's unfortunate that you don't like riding on ungroomed trails, but I'd argue that with a relatively snowless season like this one you largely have a choice of ungroomed trails or no riding at all. Trails don't have to be groomed in order to be ridden.

Hey man, I really hope you cool down over the summer. This season has been stressful even for us locals. We have money wrapped up in this sport too and this winter was the worst ever. It was hard for me to time any rides between the warm spells and the less than 12" storms we received. Between work and the rain and the warm temps, we all took a hit on this season. Bugsy rode maybe two times, I rode a handful of times and I live 5 min from Montague. I saw my grass in the yard over 5 times this winter which is unheard of. There was never a base established and if it was it was only a 6 inch base at best. I just cleaned the sled up long before April and this will be a first for me before the trails officially close. Do not expect grooming miracles when there is a crappy winter and try and get up here during the week and spread your money around without all of the stress of the moguls and traffic. Your hobby shouldn't be this stressful.

BTW- see attatched pic. I was down to the plastic on left ski. Seasonal rodes were that bad.

**MOST** of the clubs groom on a fairly regular schedule. This year was odd - very odd, and the groomer schedules matched. A week ago today I rode 105 miles on Tug Hill. Unloaded at Tuggers, rode out to Tabolts Corners, into Highmarket, past Barrows, past the Sportsmans, took a left at the T then over to Camp 2. From there back past The Hideaway, back to Barrows, Highmarket, etc and back to Tuggers. All of the trails were decent. From Tabolts Corners out everything was fresh groomed. Barnes Corners wasn't. Oh well...they were still decent.

All I can say is if you think you can do it better join the club and become their #1 groomer. I think you'll soon find what a thankless job it really is.

I appreciate the countless hours that clubs and VOLUNTEER groomer operators put in.

I know in some other areas, of the state, the grooming schedule is published and coordinated with neighboring clubs. So if you pick the right days, you can ride from one side of the county to the other with consistantly groomed trails.

Let's face it, not a whole lot of people actually live year-round in Tug Hill. And of these few people, in this remote area, how many have the time to work all day and go out and groom all night?

I really think there needs to be a way to have paid groomer operators in areas like Tug Hill. I am sure that there are plenty of good people up there, that would rather groom all winter and get paid, then sit around and collect unemployment.

In a normal year I think you'll find most of Tug Hill is on a fairly coordinated schedule. This year was anything but normal.

I rode 1100 miles this year on Tug and got absolutely bored to ride anymore. 7 Times I passed thru the upper Camp 4 trail heading to Michigan Mills and it was a complete mess except for 1 time. Camp2 was nice, thanks to Osceola's club(hats off to you guys, nice job. Upper Camp4 had moguls 3 ft high, but from Camp 2 triangle down to the Freemans it was smooth and groomed. I have had my discussions with STH groomers (thanks Ryan) and I dont blame them. Joining there club to be there #1 groomer wont work. STH has 6 primary groomer operators listed under the NYSSA site and I'm sure several back ups. If it is groomer operators you need, here I am, I am certified and ready to go and will join your club in addition to VST and Ridge Riders and will groom every Friday night, but dont let me down. Turin really stepped it up this year (thanks Pete, Brian, Mike) with a groomer that should be on the Flintstones, so it can be done. I think every one who grooms for them, wants to groom, however someone must be making the decision to have them turn around at the triangle. I was told there wasnt enough snow. HUH? 2-3 ft moguls and not a sign of ANY snirt? I think there is more to this and do not care to point blame, however the last two years that trail SUCKED all they way up past the Sportsman, and out to Highmarket Provisions. I can understand that the Seelman trail didnt have much cover until Presidents weekend, but not to go all the way up Camp 4. HMM..your sponsors are counting on you. I think you guys have some of the nicest trails, its too bad that it all cant come together, 4-5 years ago it was the only trails I really enjoyed.

Finaly someone else that going to tell the truth..ok u got a friday nite groomer operator..now let this groomer do his thing..without interference..all it takes is one voice to b heard...now we need everyone to step up and say certain clubs need to step up...i would love to come up with a rating system for these clubs ..get an A for grooming u get more money to operate..i think even if the money is raised privately ..if i can get 20 people to give 500 each and give cash prizes to operators and clubs who groom friday and sat nites ..no excuses..maybe that will work ..but i open to anything that helps..
