Hi.

I have one of those really oil thirsty -11 E-tec 800s. Changed plugs before the season started and the old ones looked realy bad. I then asked my dealer if this would mean that the injector nozzles would clog up eventually but he said no...

Now however my sled doesn't seem to start on the first pull when cold as it used to, it usually takes two or three pulls now.

It is not the pulling I'm afraid of, I have no problems pulling a cold 800 over but is the worsening cold start ability a sign of deteriorating fuel injection pattern or??

Anyone else noticing their oil-chugging E-tecs becoming "harder" to start?

Did you index your plugs? I would bet that is the problem.

Also, were these plugs changed after you fogged the motor? If so, had it run before changeout?

Compression #'s?
Have you had the piston change out done?
Yes, plug indexing can effect this.
The injectors fire at up to 1000psi, way over any thing that can plug em, no worries there but they have been known to fail. There is a operational/performance test the dealer can run on them.

My dealer changed the plugs, and it didn't get harder to start until a while after the plugs were changed. Was OK for at least 300-400km after plug change.

It has not been fogged...... ever. I refuse to give anything sucking 5-7% oil extra oil for any reason what so ever.

No, not had the pistons changed yet, it has only 2500km on it to this day.

I don't think the injectors can get completely plugged up but just a small amount of soot in the wrong place could distort the fuel plume/injection pattern. I have seen it on Diesel injectors. I'm just not sure how sensitive this engine might be to this sort of disturbance??

So no one else noticing their 800 becoming gradually harder to start?

I know mine is more stubborn this year... 2-3 pulls from a cold start after sitting for a week in -25 C. Last year it sat in a heated garage all year so I didn't notice it I guess... But with it sitting outside this year it's stubborn,, It will start on 2nd pull and then stall out after 2 secs. 3rd pull usually does it and it takes awhile to get up to 1700prm warm up. My Jeep is grumpy most days and it's plugged in all night so I don't blame the sled for being grumpy.

It had a pre-season service and only has 800 miles on it.

In o9 I went to Quebec to a friends place. The first morning it was -40. I have a pull start. It took 6 pulls to even get a hint of a spin. Three more it was running with the clutch rattling like crazy. The clutch quieted down after a few minutes. My friends 800 rev with electric would only grunt. After many pulls, he used his booster and got some bigger grunts. Then after many more pulls it finally started. They are really tight at those temps.

my wife's starts first pull every time. mine will start first pull when cold but, shut it off to take a break for 10 min and it takes three pulls to get it started. start it within a couple of min and it will start first pull. it has about 1000 miles.

It isnt the temperature, with just a few degrees C below freezing it will take 2-3 pulls now, and earlier it started on first at the same temp

I will newer ever again own a fuel injected sled with E-start, (until perhaps they start building working 4 stroke sleds)

If I cant pull start an injected sled than there is a problem and something isn't working, then the E-start wont be able to get it fired up either.....

I am just concerned that the huge amount of oil my sled is gulping down will harm the sensitive injectors in any way.
