Have you ha a chance to try this app? I'm curious how it works in Maine. I just downloaded it, but I have no experience with it. I might run it side by side with my Garmin to see how they compare.

I was able to download topo USA and NB,Canada map backgrounds before I left on the trip. This took quite a while as the files were large. I was also able to input my northern Maine and New Brunswick GPX trail maps on it. It seemed to work fine and seemed as accurate as my Garmin for the few times I checked it. I didn't think to record tracks and do an overlay them to compare the two.
When you do have a data signal for the phone, its nice to have the satellite images.
The next generation of smart phones are promising better screens.

I've used BNav in Maine and New Brunswick and don't like it as well as my Garmin, primarily because its hard to read a smart phone screen in the sunlight and I have to use it with a battery pack to make it last all day. The application itself works fine although it is a lot less intuitive than the Garmin.

Yes that is one of the draw backs trying to see the screen during the day time.
