Why is this piece needed on the new sleds? Have there been problems in the past with this outlet? Thanks

It's just an extra security precaution. If you fly off your sled you don't want to break the jack. The extension can help prevent that.

Plus whenever you get off your sled you don't have 3 ft of cord hanging off your helmet.
