Just read the story of 4 guys riding from St. Ignace to Yellowstone in 1979. 2200 miles. What's the furthest west you've ever backpacked to starting in the UP? Would be awesome to try something like these guys did if the winters would ever cooperate.

Heck, you won't even make it across MN anymore. . . .(Have to go via our friends in Canada, then you won't get back down in MT.)

So where is the story, sound like fun! (I'll be waiting for you to swing over on your way through to pick me up when we go!!!)

Here is another epic trip west from MI.

https://michcanskagr....wordpress.com/

I think they are going to do it again next year.

At work they encourage us to take time off for charity events, but I don't think 4 weeks would be approved. Maybe in retirement!

Back in 1999 (on an Indy 500) my buddy and I left from my garage in central Wisconsin (Mosinee) and made the following stops on a tour of the U.P.; Watersmeet, Manistique, Grand Marais, Big Bay, Houghton, Minocqua (WI) and back to Mosinee. We totaled just over 1,600 miles and almost ran out of snow on the last leg. I remember feeling like we won the Iron Dog when we got back safely.  It was one of the best times of my life!!!

We left Munising to "set foot" in Duluth, MN, but ran out of snow somewhere across Wisconsin and turned around.  Have done St. Ignace to Hurley and back.

Nice run!!  How many miles?  We're going to do a 6-day saddlebagger this year and we were thinking about going to St. Ignace and also a ride out to Mackinac Island for a day.

The ride across the Ice Bridge from St. Ignace to Mackinac Island is fun.  Downside is it's usually a crap shoot if the ice has formed.  They now charge you a fee to ride on the Island and have limited the areas as to where you can ride while there

Don - is the ice road "typically" open by mid-February and what do they charge to ride on the island?  It wouldn't really break my heart if we didn't make it out to the island but I thought it would be something different to see and would be something I could say I did...it looks like the scenery would be beautiful.  Thanks!!

Ski Dog---The best time to plan for a trip across the Ice Bridge would be in mid February.  The fee is $5 per sled.  If you have never been to the Island it is certainly worth going.  Once on the Island keep the sleds at a nice slow pace.  There are a couple bars and restaurants open for business.  No gas.  Fill up at the Shell Station in downtown St. Ignace.  The Mackinac Bar and Grill across the street is where the Ice Bridge begins.  Follow the line of Christmas trees to the Island.

Go to the Straits Area Snowmobile Club. You can post and ask questions and the site has honest trail reports and conditions. The locals will tell you if the Ice Bridge is open.  No one will tell you if it's safe or not.  The ice is constantly moving.  I usually wait until the locals are using it.

We usually go to St. Ignace the first or second week of February.  A good resource for information on the St.Ignace area is a site member on Doo-Talk.  Send a PM to Wink1.

Thanks for the information guys, I appreciate it!!  This is my favorite time of the year to plan trips.  I do a lot of research when I plan a saddlebag trip and I really get into it.  I usually have 4 or 5 routs to choose from including something if we have to stay in the LES areas and hotels for each one of them.  My buddy's give me a hard time because I plan far in advance...but if it was up to them we wouldn't know where we were going until the morning we departed town or where we were staying until it got dark, LOL!

We did our "Bridge to Hurley and Back" trip in 4 days.  As I recall, it was just under 1000 miles total. It was a fifteen years ago.  I am sure I could do it again.
