Put double oil,100 miles break in. Took a wide open run, clutches set at 8300. Went about 400 ft. Felt the motor go tight. Tow strap to the shop.
What would cause this? Clean carbs,no air leaks, new water/oil pump.

Need to figure out what happened. Lost a new top end. Anyone have problems with the nickel plating chipping off. Went through the bottom end. Do we need a complete tear down again. Don't want to lose another top end. $$$$$ flying away.

Rktech set up. Set rings at recommended gap. Didn't check piston clearance.

Would the crank or rod cause this? Bottom end was clean before assembly.

You got a good picture of the top of the piston? Pic of both pistons?

No, I don't believe the bottom end is at fault.

The crown on that piston looks good. I'm sure Kelsey will let you know what's up. You can get an inspection mirror and look at the underside of that piston too. Check for burnt oil stuck on the backside, an indication of excess heat on the crown. I doubt you'll find any as that looks good.

Weird. Did it have a nice warm up before taking off? Also is there a thermostat in it still? Almost looks like that one side got squeezed somehow.

Back in the day I did that to a fresh 440. Had a new top end in it, let it warm up some, thought it was warm enough and apparently wasn't. Not sure if the thermostat opened and shocked one jug or if my ring gap was too tight but it looked pretty much exactly like that.

It's was warmed up.Pulled a steep hill a few times. Than did a wide open throttle run checking clutches and rpms. Good base with about a foot of new snow. Been riding all day and was doing some test runs.
