Whats the best and closet mountain/big hill riding close to Ontario. I've always wanted to hit some awesome pow and highmark some wicked slopes but i don't want to drive halfway across the continent. Any now of any gems close to home??
POORMAN
Let me know your findings. I try to get out to B.C about once a month in the winter to do some mountain ridding but it definetly gets expensive.

Gaspe quebec!!

There is Tug Hill NY just across the Ontario boarder. Never been herd it can get very busy on the weekends.

I know the Calibogie area has decent Ski Hill, so there must be some Hill riding to do in the area. Also never been.

There are quite a few Ski Hills in the Gatineau Quebec area (Just across the the river from Ottawa) must be some trails to snowmobile on.

Abitibi Canyon north of Cochrane.

Abitibi Canyon north of Cochrane.

Done both many times and the canyon is by far is best if you like powder and hills.

Bring cash to the Canyon!

Vermont, NY and NH have the appalachians, biggest range east of the rockies. Laurentians are a similar range, but not the same size. they get less snow in the laurentians as well... Vermont is a great spot, would love to ride there, only skied

Tug Hill, is not mountainous at all, it just gets hammered with lake effect.

Ya that's for sure. That's what you get when gas is trucked in 50 gallons steel drums. I think we paid 189 a liter, not sure though.

There's a trail that clips through the southern part of Algonquin park - if you stick to the hydro line, you're in for a world of backcountry style riding.

I think it was $2.50 last year... well worth the cost of admission.

I would say Abitibi Canyon.Like to go never been.

To get some real Mountains, try Mont Valin in Quebec, lots of off trail adventures. Also, Val D'Or and area up to Devil's Mountain (really large hills) have some decent off trail fun. The Abitibi Canyon in Northern Ontario is great for deep pow fun, but they're still hills and not Mountain riding. Have fun, let us know where you go!!!

Gaspe quebec!!

I've got get out there.
I'm supposed to go out to Alberta and BC this season but if plans change, I think I'll consider the Gaspe.
How far was that to drive from your place HM?

The Abitibi Canyon is more hills than mountains but it sure is a blast to play there.
Lots of places around Cochrane to play in the deep and often steep.

I would love to ride the Gaspe. If you are looking for more riders to go I am in. Maybe one or two more of us.

Hey stranger.
I'll put ya in the loop, if my plans take me to the Gaspe.

Here is a pic of the Abitibi.
Like I said, not mountains, just big hills in a row.

Here is a couple more.
The hills go for about 10km.

Oh wow! That is sweet!! I just can't wait to get out there! Thanks for the pictures!!

there is a closed ski resort from the 60's in the beaver valley.. this is on the back side of blue mtn

still has the lift towers n all.. run down chalet. really cool spot.. i heard land ownership has changed though. ill look around and see what i can dig up.. it might be a heat score now

there is also a location near singhampton called "ground hog hill" its got some drops, bowls, step up/downs, lots of natural freerideish hits... and theres never a shortage of snow!

Yes gas is expensive and people complain but look at how far up an icy road that gas has to be brought in, and the expense of paying a person to sit up there to keep the emergency shelter open.

Don't waste your time or money going to the Canyon too late in the season. Yes the temps are warmer but the snow is lacking and hard packed from beatings laugh.gif laugh.gif You don't wanna roll on the hills when it's like that.

INTIMIDATOR3
pics from the canyon and yes that ski-doo is pulling that switchback that got stuck

It s not across the contient, only 11 hrs. from Toronto,Gaspe. Start in Riviere de loup and go south to New Richmond,up and down some really high elavatiions.Abitiby Canyons pretty tricky and you have to be careful,if you make a mistake up there it's a long tow back.My money's on Gaspe wink.gif

Even if you don't get good riding in on the hills the trail ride back down to Cochrane is frickin sweet!!! One of my favorite trails and worth the pricey gas.
umbrae
This is practically in my backyard. There's lots of hills in the blue mountain area, but I wouldnt consider it to be in the same catagorey as backcountry, or mountain style riding. I have a huge ravine behind my house and it gets boring fast. I would love to hit up Quebec this winter for a change as well cool.gif
